The budget for K12 education should be the first item out of the process so school boards can reliably know what they will have to work with during their budget cycle. Recruitment isn't as much a problem as retention of teachers passed 5 years or so. We need to return to a defined benefits system to allow teachers to retire with dignity. Investments must be made for early education all they way through post secondary.
Every source of energy is necessary and electricity cannot reduce the need for space heat which needs to be addressed through heat pump, wood or other fossil fuels in the near term. There should also be a focus on weatherization and efficiencies so that there is no loss of power/energy.
I support going back to our old oil and gas tax system that used to ensure Alaska got a fair share for our resources. Right now our budget is only 30% based on the commodity whereas it has been as much at 80% in some years past. We owe it to Alaskans to get the highest prices for our limited oil resource.
Alaskans must have faith that the election system is working. The DOE should do more to demonstrate transparency through giving any Alaskans a sneak peak in to the public operations and how it works. Raw data from vote tabulation machines could be made public and there needs to be a better system of registration and then maintaining the master list so the public can also access their important information.
I opposed the open primary/RCV system when it started but it seems to work OK and there should be fine tuning to make the RCV system work better for all. The raw data, for instance, could be made available in near real time after polls close. The dates in which the ballots are counted should be public and very close to the election day.
