The state is by far the largest funder of Alaska’s schools, through the BSA formula, or Base Student Allocation, which provides $5,960 per student to local school districts. It has gone up only $30 in the last eight years. Just accounting for inflation, it should have gone up by more than $1,300 over the same time period. The state should allocate resources based on student needs, factoring in transportation, technology, and facilities in rural areas, where costs are higher. Increased investment in internet infrastructure can help bridge the digital divide. Alaska must reinstate a defined benefit plan to encourage recruitment and retention of teachers + housing incentives, professional development & mentorship programs.
Upgrading insulation, lighting, and appliances in homes and public buildings. Implementing better building codes can help lower heating costs. Expanding natural gas infrastructure could provide a more reliable and affordable alternative to oil in rural areas. Developing small-scale liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities can supply remote communities. Establishing local microgrids improves energy security in isolated regions. These grids can be powered by a mix of local resources. Maximize existing geothermal and hydropower capacities to supplement energy needs. Green hydrogen production using renewable energy sources can provide a clean fuel alternative for transportation and industry. Diversify energy sources and enhance efficiencies.
Diversify the economy by investing in new technology sectors and renewable energy provide start-ups tax incentives. Increase oil and gas taxation and eliminate the billions in tax credits now given away. Introduce a statewide sales tax or expand existing local sales taxes without heavily impacting residents. Implement or adjust corporate income tax. Real estate development: Leverage state-owned land for development projects or affordable housing initiatives. Expand online services and implement fees for certain state services. Enhance management of fisheries to increase revenue from commercial fishing licenses and permits.
Implementing transparent processes for ballot counting and auditing can help build confidence by allowing observers from different parties to monitor the electoral process. Provide clear and accessible information about the voting process and how to report concerns. Establish stronger cybersecurity protocols to protect voter data and election infrastructure to prevent tampering and unauthorized access. Create independent, bipartisan commissions to oversee elections. Conduct post-election audits and make the results public to verify the integrity of the results and demonstrate accountability. Hold town hall meetings and forums with legislators to hear concerns from constituents about election integrity. Strengthen anti-discrimination laws,
I strongly support continuation of the open primary/ranked choice voting election system. RCV can lead to more representative outcomes and a healthier political discourse. Voters can express their preferences more freely, knowing they can rank candidates without fear of wasting their vote. This can increase overall turnout. RCV allows candidates with less mainstream appeal to compete more effectively, leading to a broader range of candidates, including those from underrepresented groups. Candidates are incentivized to appeal to a broader audience since they want to be a second or third choice for voters, which can decrease negative campaigning. RCV eliminates the need for separate runoff elections, saving time and resources.
