How do you plan to address the challenges of funding, teacher recruitment and retention, and ensuring educational equity across remote, rural and urban communities in Alaska in order to improve overall educational outcomes?
According to the U.S. Energy Administration in 2023, Alaska generated about 25% of its total electricity from renewable energy sources. What other alternatives do you think would help with our energy issues?
What options would you suggest where Alaska can increase our state revenue?
What could the Alaska legislature do to help restore voters’ trust in the integrity of our elections system?
Do you support or oppose continuation of our current open primary/ ranked choice voting election system. Why?

Short term--Raise base student funding to make up to inflationary losses so school districts can plan and not have to pink-slip teachers until the state budget is finalized. Restore defined retirement benefits for public employees, including teachers.
Long term--Update very outdated funding formula to account for real costs. This should be informed by educational goals for Alaskan students.
Developing multiple energy sources is a key component, but we also have work to do in updating our transmission grid so this more complex system can respond to variable supplies and demands. Supporting conservation and efficiency from homes to industry will help slow demand growth and lower energy utility bills.
As a resource state, the first place to look for revenue is our abundant natural resources. It's been a decade since we thoroughly looked at our oil and gas tax system. It is very complex and will need significant input to compile changes that benefit Alaskans as well as support the industry.
We also need to re-examine how the state is getting revenue from individuals. The last several years it has been from reducing the PFD, but that is disproportionately hard on young families.
Ultimately, we will end up with a number of revenue measures that make adjustments to our current sources as well as incorporating innovative solutions like income from highly digitized businesses.
We need to address the known issues that disenfranchise voters, like changes to the absentee ballot system which allow for a permanent opt-in, eliminating the witness signature requirement, and allowing for ballot curing.
I support the current system that was approved by voters. It allows all voters to select any candidate in the primary election, as well as providing an instant run-off for the general election.
