The cost of raising the Base Student Allocation and returning to a defined benefits system would outweigh the funding spent on recruiting and retaining staff, especially in districts that have had to rely on temporary J-1 visa teachers. Additionally, supporting behavioral health services in schools reduces high rates of youth suicidality and ensures that our kids have a safe place to learn. A comprehensive fiscal plan with new revenues would ensure that we can adequately fund public education and school major maintenance projects.
Southcentral’s energy crisis is a result of limited corporate exploration and production on Cook Inlet’s existing gas supply and lack of a diverse energy portfolio. We made progress this year on gas storage and incentives for Cook Inlet natural gas development through reserve-based lending. In the short term, I support fiscally sound solutions that mitigates a spike in Alaskans’ energy bills and responds to the international energy market. In the long term, we need to continue to diversify Alaska’s energy portfolio by upgrading the Railbelt’s energy grid, expanding renewable energy production in wind, solar, and hydropower, and making energy efficiency improvements accessible for all Alaskans.
Alaska loses over a billion dollars annually to out-of-state corporations, and raising oil and gas taxes will help fund state services and diversify our economy. Additionally, we need new revenues as part of a comprehensive fiscal plan. A progressive income tax captures dollars from non-residents and is least regressive to low-income workers and rural Alaska.
A strong democracy needs to be transparent and representative of the people. Since the open primary/ranked choice voting reform, I support expanding voter education in multiple languages to make sure all communities understand the voting process. We must restore campaign contribution limits in order to mitigate the disproportionate role of money in elections. Additionally, we must ease the voting process for every eligible voter through policies such as ballot curing, removal of the witness signature requirement, and same-day voter registration.
I support the open primary and ranked-choice vote system. As an involved participant of the Democratic Party, I believe open primaries are the best way to engage the majority of Alaska voters who identify as independents and cannot participate in closed party primaries. Additionally, ranked-choice voting is beneficial for our democracy because it incentives candidates to garner the support of the broad electorate, instead of focusing on a smaller partisan base.
