The current situation is clear. Alaska is no longer a competitive employer, and our schools, teachers, and support staff struggle to fill positions necessary to educate our youth. I want to have the legislative discussion and then vote to enact strategic wage and benefits compensation packages to help turn this around. Exit interviews of teachers leaving Alaska strongly indicate our poor retirement benefits and lack of participation in social security as a state are a huge part of the teacher turnover challenge we now face. The state budget process should reflect the increased education costs in remote and rural communities. I am also committed to supporting a strong University of Alaska system, which is integral to our future.
Oil and gas will remain a vital energy source for decades. Natural gas appears to have a stronger staying power as a bridge fuel than other sources. The availability and cost of energy is a chief driver of the cost of living, quality of life, and overall economic prosperity. A significant investment in all energy systems will be required. Alaska is well-positioned with natural, renewable energy resources. Fiscal and regulatory certainty is important to develop and integrate these resources into our energy grid. We must invest in hydroelectric, tidal, geothermal, clean coal-powered generation, and wind and solar energy systems. Upgraded and new power transmission lines are critical to statewide energy delivery systems.
Revenue recovery from the federal government for prohibiting natural resource development in Alaska was foundational to our statehood compact. State revenues will be most enhanced as our natural resource sector is successful in its efforts to access lands with development potential and bring those natural resources to market.
I have full confidence in Alaska's election system's integrity. I am willing to consider options to improve voter trust in it.
I support our current open primary/ranked-choice voting system. Ranked choice voting promotes civic engagement and ethical leadership over our broken partisan system.
