We need to listen to our students. With COVID allowing us online learning in the home, some students excelled on this learning platform. We need to continue on the path that is working for them. For the students that are back in the school building we need to put a focus on rebuilding that trust with the teachers. I also believe that standardized testing needs to be refreshed. As this is a great tool for the teachers to evaluate the students, it's not an accurate depiction of ones academic progression. I believe standardized testing needs to be incorporated with a more diverse curriculum.
One thing that stuck out to me as a parent, is that I always got a letter or email stating what decisions were already made. Being more proactive to involve the parents would be a step in the right direction. Send an email or newsletter out to parents before the decisions were made so the parents could weigh in on the discussion. We need to be more transparent. We also need to invite the students to this process. We need to listen to what they have to say. They are why we are here.
To address our new challenges along with the challenges we faced before COVID , there will be many lengthy meetings. We need to take care of our immediate challenges, such as making sure everyone feels safe and protected at school, and then move on to our education deficit. I believe we have done a good job so far appropriating funds. For example, when the school busses were not being used we used those funds to support our distanced learning with hot spots. This is a long road ahead of us, Im ready to get to work.

I believe it is ok for educator to look at things differently than they did when I was a child. A more inclusive, creative, and in some cases perhaps a more physical approach may be required for students who do not think in the "standard" way. I believe that many educators have ideas on how to approach it, but are bound by state "standards". I have every faith that students can catch up to what they may have missed at this point if given the freedom to think as a child thinks, and educators are given license to have some fun in methods of teaching.
One of the reasons I am running is advocating more parental involvement in student education as well as student health. I know that the COVID situation had blocked a lot of roads off to us in terms of typical involvement like fund raising, and helping in classrooms, but parents still deserve to have the final say in education plans, and in health regulations. I am not at all saying that the school has no say, but as it currently stands, parents voices are less protected when it comes to health issues, or special needs.
With the world opening up once again at last, I think it's time families be brought back into the loop as far as where budgets and educations plans stand. Sanitation standards obviously still need to be a priority, but families should also be brought back into participation with supply lists, and donation and fund raising possibilities. We are a community, and the best way to keep us functioning as such is to stay transparent, inclusive, and open to ideas.
