Online learning brought about by the Covid pandemic has highlighted the disproportionate impact that our educational system has on students of difference - race, ethnicity, disability, and economic status. School districts need to provide resources focused on helping these students regain ground lost. Further, districts need to concentrate on proven strategies to help students achieve and not waste precious time and resources in the next few months having students take tests that are not designed to inform their individual progress. Teachers and support staff can provide wonderful insights on what some of these strategies might be.
I would make our schools inviting place for parents and families. I believe many parents are uncertain as to how to support their students and schools are particularly well-positioned to provide services and educational activities that will help inform them. There are also organizations in our area that districts can partner with to help provide some of these services. Schools should also consider adjusting building hours to accommodate the busy and varied schedules of our parents and families.
One of the takeaways of the pandemic is that the internet connectivity in our district is inadequate and inequitable for many families. Our school district, working with community partners, must invest the needed funds to address this situation. Additional state and federal funding is currently being made available to school districts but this will provide only a temporary cushion to lesson the pandemic impact and our district will need to develop a long-term strategy to address the continuing needs of our students. I believe every student has the capacity to be successful and schools have the responsibility to provide the supports needed to achieve that result.

I am a huge advocate for equity in education. What that means to me is meeting students where they are to get them where they need to be. During these difficult times it's even more important that we allocate funds where they have the greatest impact. In order to close achievement gaps we will have to take a deep dive into all of the reasons for those disparities. Looking closer at the racial and socioeconomic causes for disparity informs us where we need to focus our efforts to help close those gaps. I fully believe in giving support where it is needed most to insure all students have equal educational opportunity no matter their ethnic or socioeconomic background.
I want to see all parents involved in the decision making process for our school district. I think we can increase parent involvement through robust information campaigns that provide information in both Spanish and English. That could look like newsletters in digital form, but also in print for those families that don't have internet services. Offering polls and/or surveys would also be a great way to find out the what the parents of our students want and need.
The first and foremost expenditure that comes to mind is PPE and infrastructure for keeping everyone safe. Making sure that barriers, hand sanitizer, ways to coordinate traffic flow and sanitizing efforts are all funded is necessary. I believe there is additional funding to help with this coming from the government and making sure it is spent where we can be most effective is crucial.
