Karina is a proud daughter of Mexican immigrants. Raised in Salem, and now the mother of two children in SK schools. She has great experience, from working as a substitute teacher in the district, running a youth program, and working alongside children and families in several capacities. She has served at community-based organizations to build and strengthen community and family relationships. Karina earned a Masters of Social Work and is at the Early Learning Division, Oregon Department of Ed.

I have seen these achievement gaps in our schools from every perspective: as a student in Salem-Keizer growing up, as a parent of two kids in our schools, as a substitute teacher in our classrooms, when leading youth programs in our community, and in various capacities throughout my career serving families with young children. These disparities are serious and we are letting far too many students down.
I will bring my classroom education experience and my experience working with our youth to supporting our wonderful educators so they can give every student the individualized attention they need to thrive in school and beyond.
I am a parent of two young kids in our district, so engaging parents is deeply personal to me. I disagree with the steps our current board has taken to make public participation harder, and would make it a priority to open up our school board meetings and make them welcoming.
Additionally, from my work experience, I am comfortable meeting directly with students and parents in our schools and community spaces. I will make myself visible and accessible as a school board member so our community can connect with me and share their ideas and concerns.
As a parent of two kids during this pandemic, I have personally experienced how expensive distance learning has been for families. The cost on our district, particularly now as we work to safely reopen our classrooms, is huge.
I had the privilege of serving on a state committee advising how dollars from Oregon’s Student Success Act would be spent in schools across our state, and I would take that experience to fighting in our State Capitol for more dollars for these urgent needs so we can quickly fully reopen our school buildings while following all health guidelines set by doctors and public health officials.
He visto estas brechas de rendimiento en nuestras escuelas desde todas las perspectivas: como estudiante en Salem-Keizer mientras crecía, como madre de dos niños en nuestras escuelas, como maestra sustituto en nuestras escuelas, cuando dirigía programas para jóvenes en nuestra comunidad, y en diversas capacidades a lo largo de mi carrera al servicio de familias con niños pequeños. Estas disparidades son serias y estamos decepcionando a demasiados estudiantes.
Voy a llevar mi experiencia de educación y mi experiencia trabajando con nuestros jóvenes para apoyar a nuestros maravillosos educadores para que puedan dar a cada estudiante la atención individualizada que necesitan para prosperar en la escuela y más allá.
Soy madre de dos niños pequeños en nuestro distrito, por lo que involucrar a los padres es algo muy personal para mí. No estoy de acuerdo con los pasos que ha tomado nuestra mesa directiva actual para dificultar la participación pública, yo haría una prioridad abrir nuestras reuniones de la Mesa Directiva escolar y hacer toda la comunidad bienvenida.
Además, desde mi experiencia laboral, me siento cómoda al reunirme directamente con los estudiantes y los padres en nuestras escuelas y espacios comunitarios. Me haré visible y accesible como miembro de la Mesa Directiva escolar para que nuestra comunidad pueda conectarse conmigo y compartir sus ideas e inquietudes.
Como madre de dos hijos durante esta pandemia, he vivido personalmente lo caro que ha sido el aprendizaje a distancia para las familias. El costo en nuestro distrito, particularmente ahora que trabajamos para reabrir nuestras escuelas de manera segura, es enorme.

Your Experience/Qualificatons
I am not a politician. I am a working class veteran who has volunteered in our community through coaching Little League, High School and travel teams. I officiate football and basketball at local schools and have been to every school in our district. I was a member of the Little League board as Safety Officer. I was also on the Booster Club at North Salem High and was president for a year. One of my proud accomplishments was to get the community together along with alumni to install field turf.

I believe that closing the gap of disparities is paramount for the success of our children. We need to get to the root cause, collect hard data to study where this is happening. To build a strong curriculum for children to have a strong desire to come to school and not be delinquent. Support programs that offer a wide variety of studies, but still get students proficient at learning the basics of math, writing, reading. I Support STEM and CTEC. Vocational school may be the best way for students to learn a skill for life after public schools. Create a sense of belonging for our children, give them meaning for their young life. We can do this by ensuring they are able to read and write by 2nd or 3rd grade. I believe this is the age we lose many students--many do not recover, end up quitting or not understand the curriculum. It's more difficult for those who do not speak English. There are over 60 different languages spoken in our school system. We need to help these students in need.
This an important topic. Getting parents involved not only holds the student accountable, the parents are then invested in their education. We can do this by reaching out to parents, through a meeting, or a questionnaire. To find out if they need help with learning how to use a computer and Zoom for instance. Are they a single parent or both parents that work. Do the students have to work or babysit so their parent(s) can work. Do they have the income to afford internet or a quiet place to distance learn. Ultimately I want kids back in school full time. I believe this is the best way for students to learn. All that I've talked to have expressed this to me. We need to reach out, be transparent and approachable to parents. Help them feel that it is best for their student to be in school, to break a chain of poverty through education. The district also should have engaged with the community more before unilaterally deciding to remove School Resource Officers, which I believe many want.
To hold the district fiscally responsible. Covid has created many challenges, in that many kids are now a year behind: educationally, socially, and economically. I have seen the schools that have buildings being renovated or rebuilt. Those are great for our students' environment, but we have to get them back to in person learning to fully benefit from these upgrades. We should spend more for underprivileged students, to create more equity through our school system. One thing we can do more of is partnering with local businesses to support school efforts to add more vocational or technical schooling. I believe these programs benefit a more wide range of students and keep them engaged in school. Students that go to CTE classes graduate at a higher rate than those who do not. The benefit for our local businesses is obvious as well. Let's put more resources into those programs. I think another priority is helping single parent or unemployed families with more with resources.
