Norman Board of Education, Office #1

The Norman Board of Education oversees and sets policies for the District to ensure that all students are offered a quality education. Members are elected to staggered, five-year terms by a majority vote of the voters in the designated election district they represent. Regular board meetings are held at the Administrative Services Center, 131 S. Flood. The Board believes in communicating with the public about the needs and achievements of the district. Last Election You Voted Norman City Council election, February 2021
As the governing body for Norman Public Schools, the stated responsibilities of the school board are to approve the budget, craft policies, and hire/supervise the Superintendent. Of equal value is advocating in Norman and the Legislature for public schools, teachers, staff, students, and families. An important aspect is how we perform those actions. The first how is the filter through which we make all decisions – “what will create the best outcome for the students we serve throughout the entire district not just our elected geographic boundaries.” The second how is that all ideas and thoughts are welcome. Diversity in thought and constructive disagreement create the greatest opportunity for informed decisions. We seek input from all constituents and have lively debate. The third how is more important in today’s world than ever before. We must be flexible, compromise, and be kind in all our actions. Different ideas are not wrong, they are just different, and all are valuable.
I was selected to the school board in 2014. I had an active role in creating the strategic plan, core values, and mission. We are working on a comprehensive plan for recruiting, interviewing, evaluating, hiring and training the best and brightest teachers for our schools. This plan includes extensive training for all administrators who are part of the hiring process. As the current President of the Board, I have had an active summer, fall, and winter working with Dr. Migliorino on virtual, in-person, blended, and remote learning opportunities. We communicate weekly and many times daily about school issues including everything from the bond process to snow days. I led the change in our construction management process which has created significant savings for our district. As a parent of a former Monroe and current Alcott 7th grade student, I have been able to participate in the WatchDOG program and other activities. Stephanie and I will have two children attending Monroe.
• A defined and clear path for teachers to increase compensation based upon professional education (in addition to education levels, years of service and step raises). • Diversity of teachers who mirror the population of students. • A constant supply of the best and brightest teachers from the universities choosing Norman Public Schools as their career destination. • A comprehensive system to identify, support, counsel, and effectively treat all mental health and trauma issues with professionals in conjunction with NPS and a new partnership with the Cleveland County Health Department. • Lowering the class size and/or supplying additional teaching resources in the classroom. • A complete safety and security model utilizing technology to monitor all schools and campuses across the district. • A complete volunteer program across the district to include at least one volunteer coordinator at each school site. • Improved comprehensive surveys seeking input from all constituents.

To advocate for students, teachers, families, and the community. We must put inclusion principles into practice by developing policies that ensure an equitable learning environment for all students and staff. BOE members are elected officials and are expected to represent their constituents and to guide the district accordingly.

To communicate with transparency. We cannot make progress without first building trust, and we cannot build trust without actively engaging in honest communication.

Organized and operated the Sharing Tree clothing and book exchange at Monroe and Alcott.

Assist with tutoring and program development at The Spot, a free community space for youth 14 and up.

Community liaison for the sex ed and Rape Prevention Education task force at the Women’s Resource Center.

Founded Norman Community Advocacy Team (nCAT). Through our Learn Safe Norman teacher assistance initiative, we coordinated supply drives and fundraisers for desk shields and cleaning supplies, coordinated with the district to distribute PPE supplies, and created a ‘transparency database’ of public NPS records. We also developed and submitted a Safe Reopening Plan for High-need, At-risk, and SPED students, but neither the board nor the district responded in any way.

As Vice President of Norman Pride, I’ve coordinated with NPS GSA clubs and provided resources and support for LGBTQ+ students and families throughout Norman.
Advocacy - Schools must be a safe place for all students and staff in order to ensure equitable learning:

- Comprehensive and inclusive bullying prevention and sex ed programs

- Allyship and personal accountability taught K-12

- Rape Prevention Education taught 6-12

- Trauma-informed training for all staff

- Reduce caseloads and admin duties for counselors

Communication & Transparency - Community interaction is crucial to creating sustainable policies:

- The entire decision-making process should occur during school board meetings.

- No issues should be put to a vote until community input has been considered and publicly discussed.

Inclusion - Addressing inequity and social injustice at all levels within the district is paramount:

- Put DEI principles into practice at all levels

- Address the needs of all marginalized and underserved groups

Oversight - Without oversight to evaluate efficacy and monitor progress, we can never truly move forward.
