Board of Directors At Large. Four-year term. Vote for three.The Aurora Public Schools Board of Education will have three seats open this year. The Board election will be held on November 5, 2019.The APS Board of Education is a seven-member group elected to establish policies for the school district. Board members are elected at large and serve four-year terms. The Board addresses the concerns of the local community while working within the framework of state and federal laws. This includes approving curricula and instructional materials and adopting the annual budget.Board candidates run on a non-partisan basis and do not need to be educators.

Background Amber Drevon is an Aurora native and mother of three dedicated to ensuring Aurora Public Schools provides all students with a quality education. Amber’s three children attend Vista Peak Preparatory High School. Amber previously served on the APS Board of Education for a 4-year term, 2 years as a Director and 2 years serving as Board President. Amber understands the role of a board member, the district landscape, and our changing community. As a Board of Education director, the best interest of students will continue to be Amber’s number one core value. All programs and proposals will be evaluated based on their ability to serve the needs of students and families. Amber believes that for Aurora Public Schools to be successful, board members need to communicate with all stakeholders, strengthen relationships, proactively respond to the changing Aurora community, develop a collective vision, and ensure accountability, which is why she’s seeking another term. Amber graduated from Rangeview High School and then The University of Denver with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. She currently works as a Business Manager focused on enhancing performance through evaluating company practices and developing new techniques that adapt with the business environment. Amber looks forward to working with you and serving the needs of Aurora Public Schools in her next term.

One of my top priorities is the effective use of resources and ensuring every dollar is used to positively impact students. I believe we need to maintain or reduce the student to teacher ratio. We need to invest in personnel to break down the language barrier of our extensively diverse student population. And, we need to continue to provide wrap around services such as mental health and nutrition.
One of my priorities is the school district’s ability to embrace change and respond appropriately to the evolving Aurora community. We need to engage all stakeholders and welcome them as active participants in developing solutions that enhance the lives of students and families. I will focus on building trust and fostering strong communication that allows for collaboration and transparency. Another priority is our ability to connect, motivate, and encourage students to identify and then achieve what success means for them. Every student should have at least one adult in their life that can serve as a role model and mentor. There is an opportunity through after school programming to ensure we are reaching all students.
I value collaboration in order to create successful outcomes for students. This begins with respect for different viewpoints, listening, and learning from all participants. We must seek out and understand the perspective of all parties and create consensus on goals and objectives. If we hold the best interests of students at the center of every conversation and decision, then we can agree to disagree respectfully.

Background Vicki Reinhard is an educator whose career spanned 36 years. She taught a Language Arts and Social Studies block in Omaha, Nebraska, for 4.5 years before moving to Aurora with her husband and two young sons. She worked as a substitute in Omaha, Aurora Public Schools and at Excelsior Youth Center in Aurora as a counselor and a teacher. In 1993, She began teaching at APS in an elementary Special Education position, working at Kenton Elementary for 20 years and at Montview Math and Health Sciences Elementary for 5 years.

Of utmost importance is to continue funding mental health supports in all of our schools. APS has hired and placed more mental health staff in our buildings for this current school year; we need to retain staff in these positions so that the social/emotional needs of our students can be addressed and met.

Also, very important is reducing class size. Teaching 35 – 40 students in one content class does not allow for quality instruction and immediate feedback. Elementary class size in the upper 20’s -30’s does not allow for individualized instruction and is not conducive to creating a positive teaching/learning environment.

Increasing teacher plan time will allow teachers to plan well-thought out lessons to reach all learners.

Attracting, recruiting, and retaining high quality teachers is necessary to the success of all of our students.
2. The greatest concerns I would have over the next 4 years would include teacher retention, including recruiting, hiring, and retaining teachers of color to mirror our student population, and the move toward privatization of our schools. I would continue to support HR in its endeavors to recruit teachers of color, including travel to job fairs held locally and out-of-state. I would also look at ways of supporting what teachers say would keep them here, possibly including assistance with housing which has become less and less affordable in our communities. Addressing the move toward privatization of our schools would include initiatives to keep our neighborhood public schools local and public by reducing the cost of bringing in outside management and consulting firms, and holding listening tours to hear our staff, student and community voices around what they believe their needs are to maintain their neighborhood schools.
My style of conflict resolution is to bring together the involved parties to first discuss what is at issue and try to reach an agreement or compromise. If needed, a mediator can be chosen to assist in reaching a resolution to the conflict. If this is not successful, an arbitrator can rule on the conflict. This process should remain professional, peaceful, and respectful.

Two of my greatest District Concerns for the next four years is first of all retention of local control and secondly implementation of the APS Blueprint.

Each Board meeting I would have the Superintend himself give a brief ten minute update of how and why we are making progress in both areas.

Next I would have involved staff members present graphs, charts and explanations of progress, quarterly, with a succinct, written progress report, disseminated to the public.
Restorative Justice is a face-to-face discussion, conducted in a safe space, with all involved parties, working toward a settlement that is fair and just to all.
