Background My three sons attended Central Elementary School, Kearney Middle School and graduated from Adams City High School. I currently have a grandson attending Adams City Middle School in 8th grade and a granddaughter who is a sophomore at Adams City High School. I have served on the Adams 14 District Accountability Committee in the past and began my career in public education working for the director of special education in Adams 14 in 1997. I was a board member for the North Metro Arts Alliance from January 2009 – July 2013. In addition, I chaired the Colorado Organization of Superintendent/Board Assistants from June 2005 – August 2009 and I was elected treasurer in July 2017, a position I still maintain. I am currently the Board Liaison in Denver Public Schools and have worked on the turnaround efforts with the DPS School Board as we improve the educational experience of our children.

Oversight of policies and budget are the most important duties of the school board. I would work to ensure that the funding we receive is directed closest to the classroom and that it has the most impact on student progress. In addition, I would fight for policies that bring more dollars to the funding of public education. Colorado ranks last in school funding and yet is one of the strongest economies in the country. We must do more to invest in our schools and that starts with fixing how we fund our schools.
My first concern is the tremendous turnover of teachers in the district. Our teachers deserve to be treated as professionals, deserve dignity in their pay and deserve high quality professional development to improve their practice. I believe deeply in the potential of Adams 14 and I know that we have incredible teachers, leaders and students who are committed to improving our district. I believe that if we all work together we can finally get off the State Accountability clock and create a district in which our teachers are choosing to remain.

Second, Adams 14 has not had consistent, strong leadership that is prepared to do the turnaround work that the district desperately needs. We must work with MGT to make the necessary changes to move forward. We must also hire a superintendent who is competent and committed to building a supportive environment where adults are working collaboratively, using best practices and creating predictability for our community and families.
I would say my style of conflict resolution is one of collaboration. I believe in working together to find a mutually acceptable solution. This involves listening to one another, minimizing negative feelings, discussing areas of agreement and ensuring everyone understands each other’s viewpoints. I’ve worked with many different board members during my years in public education and feel the most successful are those that work collaboratively with their fellow board members to reach a mutually acceptable decision.
