Michael O’Brien serves as the 12th Ward Common Council representative. The 12th Ward is located in the western portion of Albany, and extends from Allen Street and Central Ave to the Point of Woods homes at the intersection of Washington Ave Extension and Route 155. The Ward includes residential homes, apartments, senior living facilities, nursing homes, retail stores, offices, the Pine Bush Preserve and the SUNY Polytechnical facility.
Mr. O'Brien is a longtime resident of the Capital District and graduate of Albany Law School. He is experienced working and relating to diverse populations, volunteering on various boards and with community organizations, including the Underground Railroad History Project and the Central Ave Business Improvement District. For forty years, Mr. O'Brien has practiced as an attorney, working for Albany County Social Services Department, Mental Hygiene Legal Service, and the NY State Health Department.
Now retired from active employment, Mr. O'Brien currently serves as a volunteer pro-bono attorney with the Legal Aid Society of North Eastern NY at Stratton VA Medical Center and at the Albany Housing Coalition Homeless Veterans Program. He is also a retired JAG attorney with the NY Army National Guard.
Mr. O'Brienand his wife Diana have three adult daughters and two grandchildren.

a. Transition Albany to an efficient economical solid waste recycling and disposal process before the landfill closes.
b. Insure financial stability for Albany by: Limiting bonding to the useful life of the capital items for which the bonding is undertaken. Work to receive a fair share of state AIM money for municipalities. Assess taxes on portions of currently exempt properties which have commercial income. Review IDA tax abatements for assessment of whether the projects are achieving their stated community economic benefits goals.
c. Improve City infrastructure maintenance and improvement ( to include roads, water resources, sewer, data and communication technology by shared services agreements with state and county government, as well as with other municipalities and agencies..
