How does a school board balance the need to provide a quality education with the need to respond to the local taxpayer burden?

What do you hope to accomplish as a school board member?

Education and Experience I am a Southeast Ohio native who grew up primarily in Belpre. I graduated Belpre High School in 2003 and attended Washington State Community College and Marietta College where I studied mass media. I have been a journalist for the past decade, spending most of those years at The Athens Messenger. I am currently a freelance journalist. My husband Joe and I have resided in Guysville for the past 4 years. Our daughter is a first-grader at Amesville Elementary.
A school board needs to ensure that the district's finances are in line with student enrollment. If enrollment goes up, so does funding and the need for teachers/staff. If enrollment drops, sometimes cuts need to be made to be fiscally responsible. Our current board does a great job with keeping taxpayer burden low and education free for all students. All students are provided with a free education and two daily meals. Thanks to our schools' PTOs, field trips are also free for all families.
As a board member, I hope to provide a different point of view: one of a mother. I believe our current board is doing great things, but there is a lack of diversity among the members. As a parent of a young child in the district, I have a stake in seeing Federal Hocking thrive. I want to make sure that teachers/staff have what they need to help our children succeed. I want to keep Fed Hock on the path to fiscal stability while also improving facilities where possible.

Balance with budget and local taxes Is easy. Each individual must allocate Some kind of budget to help their local Schools. It is necessary for children To have acceptable class rooms and To also have access to the best equipment. If everyone does their part, it comes out Right and fair in the end.
I want to be an ear to all concerned with the school system. I want to ask questions and make sure right is being done for all Who attend the school, send their child to school, or teach at The schools. There is no way to make everyone happy, But there is a happy medium. Thank you for allowing me to participate In this. I hope to see you soon.

Education and Experience I grew up in Athens and attended Federal Hocking from kindergarten through high school and graduated from Federal Hocking in 1997. I then attended Hocking College and later moved to Columbus. It was in Columbus where I met my husband Mike Boyd, we later moved to Lancaster where I served as school board Vice President at St Bernadette school in Lancaster. About 5 years ago my husband and I decided to move to my family's farm (the same farm I was born and raised on) and build our forever home.
By balancing the need versus the ability to pay. Like any businsss it's always a balancing act about what you need to accomplish and what we want to accomplish, the difference with a school board is you must take children's welfare into consideration.
My goal is to improve transparency and communication between the community and school board members. logo
