Experience (300 characters max) Served all ranks in both volunteer and career capacities and as Deputy Chief for 15 years. 12 years in the private sector as a consultant in fire protection, Safety and hazardous materials work. have been serving as a fire commissioner for Stevens 1 for 12.5 years.
I have been a fire commissioner since my appointment in April of 2005. I was successful in for re-election in 2011. We have been working on several issues in the Fire District. Financial, that is to say ensuring that funding is available for personnel, fire and medical response apparatus and establishing reserve accounts for long term District needs. We still have lots to do. We will open up two new fire stations in the spring of 2018. It's my considered opinion that sound business practices will be required for future operations and the policies be in place to ensure that these matters move along in a logical and fiscally responsible manner. That is why I would like to be returned for a new term.
The lack of available volunteers to respond to the various types of calls in a timely manner. The majority of personnel work outside the Fire District. They leave for work starting around 5-6 am and really do not return late afternoon evening. This directly affects our daytime and early evening response availability and the arrival response times.

Funding for all personnel both career and volunteer personnel is a constant concern. With our current financial conditions it limits us in what we can provide to the citizens of the Fire District.

Replacement of equipment for use in structural fire protection, Wildland inter urban fire operations and emergency medical responses is not cheap. It is not just the trucks but what goes on them as well. Long term planning and cost effective purchases is critical for sustaining our viability to perform safely effectively and efficiently.
The most urgent is staffing. We have 8 stations. We are low in personnel in most station response areas. We are trying to think and implement outside the box practices in fulfilling our needs both career and volunteer wise. Most of our volunteers give is about three years. As a result we are utilizing non traditional approaches for our stations including folks who live outside the District.
As a volunteer I served in all ranks including Battalion Chief of a Task Force Station. As a career member of my department I served as the Training Officer, Communications Director and Prevention Officer. This placed me in positions where collaboration with neighbor departments, Department of Natural Resources and establishing and maintaining relationships with County Agencies, Developers and direct contact with citizens of the District. In private practice I consulted with both public agencies and private corporations to develop and put into place/practice practical solutions for solving problems. logo
