Since my first days in office my goal has been to see Monroe become the centerpoint of East Snohomish county. We have excellent location, a passionate citizenry, and great ideas. We need a mayor who is open to capitalizing on those strengths.
A mayor needs vision to see opportunities, strength to change direction, and passion to want the best for the citizens.
I believe I have those strengths and can move the town in the direction of more open government with more opportunities for everyone
Economic Development, Traffic, Homelessness
Economic Development is critical for a thriving city. Every nearby town of size has some type of economic development focal to reach out and market the benefits of locating in their town. I want to bring that position back. We need to be competitive with other cities in the region and become more than a "gas and groceries" stop. With a thriving business we should have the funds to deal with local traffic issues and provide support as we deal with the homeless.
Monroe is blessed with a concerned citizenry who support our Seniors. As Councilman, I’ve reached out to the Senior community by voting to approve transportation for the Senior center and other functions. I have regular discussions with Seniors about their concerns and issues.
I would like to expand programs which help Seniors become more involved in the community, such as working with at-risk and homeless youth and children. Perhaps as a "classroom grandparent" or other docent.
Immigration is a national issue which needs to set at the federal level. Attempting to set immigration policy at the local level, even with the best intentions, could lead to selective discrimination and violation of civil rights. We are a nation of laws and rights and should remain true to them.
Having said that, I am proud how the citizens of Monroe have welcomed others to our community without the divisiveness seen elsewhere.
Like many cities, Monroe has its struggles with maintaining our streets and utilities due to past years of neglect and the recent financial crisis. Roads need to be upgraded to accommodate the increase in population, allow people and emergency vehicles to get to their homes quicker. We need to direct building fees towards these less-glamorous improvements versus increasing the number of parks.
The homeless who want help have the embedded Social Worker program approved by City Council. The next challenge is working with the homeless who want resources to maintain their current lifestyle, yet do not want to move into treatment of other programs. We need to work with County and other resources to come up with a game plan to encourage lifestyle changes.
Everyone who wants help should get help, but our citizens should not have to support someone who wants to pursue illegal activities.

Mayor (since 1/1/14), Councilmember (11/2003-12/31/09), Senior Legislative Analyst (9 yrs), project manager (4 yrs), planner (10 yrs), and firefighter (3 yrs). Professional experience working with policy & budgeting law enforcement, human services, transportation, public works, and planning.
I’ve been working as Mayor since 2014. I really care about our community and, working with our partners, I have lead a number of projects, improvements, and initiatives to keep Monroe a safe and great place to live and raise a family and to start and grow a business. Under my leadership, we have seen positive growth in residential, commercial, and manufacturing development. We have been successful in completing a number of projects. I am running for re-election to build on these successes.
Public safety, especially drugs and homelessness. As Mayor in Monroe, I am actively working with law enforcement, churches, agencies, and other interest groups to better address these issues.
Transportation. In Monroe, I am actively working on improving our road network while lobbying the State to improve SR522 and US2.
Continuing Business recruitment and growth. While Mayor, our businesses have grown and I am working with our partners to expand business recruitment and growth even more.
Continuing business recruitment and growth is most critical of the three. This is why, as Mayor, I am working with our partners to implement a more robust economic development strategy. We have completed a number of road, parks, sidewalk, downtown revitalization, and other projects to support new businesses. We are investing in law enforcement and a new approach to addressing homelessness to ensure a safe community where people want to live, shop, recreate, and invest.
My commitment to senior citizens is keeping Monroe a safe and great place to live with affordable housing, opportunities for business, great medical facilities, low taxes, and a great transportation system. It is important that in addition to doing all of these things that we continue to support our seniors including our commitment to funding our senior bus.
The issue of legal and illegal immigration is a federal issue. The City of Monroe should continue to follow the US Constitution and federal law on immigration issues.
The City of Monroe is experiencing significant growth as is much of our region today. Under my leadership, we are being wise in how we invest the revenue that we are receiving from new development - investing real estate excise tax revenue from home sales, impact fees, one time construction sales tax, and grant awards - to improve our roads, parks, sidewalks, and other infrastructure to serve our existing residents and business owners and also serve new growth.
Under my leadership, the City of Monroe has contracted with Snohomish County for a half-time embedded social worker. Our police officers accompany a social worker, who visits with people in need to help them find housing and services. The goal is to help people get the aid they need whether it is housing, drug treatment, mental/behavioral health services, or other assistance to help them end the cycle of homelessness.
