Elections only provide officeholders with feedback when they offer more than one choice. How else may a candidate learn whether voters endorse the vision? Without a functioning Fourth Estate, what other opportunity exists for constituents to scrutinize & appraise government performance? I don’t want to be mayor, I want a referendum on civic priorities, but this is the system we have – if we wish voters to participate, candidates must step up.
1. emergency preparedness 2. food & housing security 3. Them
Them: the ones whose appearance or culture seem threatening, the ones whose choices or circumstances render them privileged or unworthy, the ones we blame for our frustrations. We need to eliminate Them, not from our community, but from our discourse. We are all Us.
I don’t understand the question. Are you asking if it’s time to herd granny onto the ice flow? We are all either seniors, or getting there faster than we wish. Elders contribute wisdom & perspective, and provide a resourceful growth industry. Removing obstacles to independent living & social involvement, and training & organizing assistance, can only strengthen our community. I continue to promote inclusion of age, disability, and religion in Concrete’s non-discrimination agreements.
Let’s enact laws preventing lowlanders from migrating uphill to escape rising seas. Why should we set aside our fearful defensiveness in the face of human desperation?
Wastewater treatment plant out of compliance; sidewalks designed to displace disabled residents; unstable hydric soil movement which can disrupt utilities & threaten lives; uncontrolled speeding on residential streets; contaminated former industrial sites; stormwater drainage into overburdened sewer system; diversion of maintenance resources to promote tourist attractions; appropriation of low income housing site for park space; rebranding efforts to divert scrutiny.
Accommodation. Shelter needn’t be fancy or free or permanent, but it shouldn’t be prohibited.
