Experience (300 characters max) I have owned my own business - offices in Thurston & Pierce - 22 years. Have decades of extensive background in public service employment. Am an advocate for community support programs with emphasis in public service providers such as local emergency services, schools and public safety providers.
Last year after my retirement, several compelling personal stories from my neighbors and friends brought the needs of my Fire District to my full attention. I believed that no one with really good communication skills and contract knowledge was rising to the responsibility to run for Fire Commissioner in District 17, Position 3. Although, always a supporter of emergency services, my family had no personal experience requiring their services. Upon investigation and research, I found that for over a decade our First Responders had not been given due respect and reliable support by their current commissioners. I was compelled to file, to run, and work to educate, and inform our community about our Fire Fighters’ heavy responsibilities, and their long unmet needs. I decided as a candidate, and concerned citizen, to work to promote openness in communication and be a liaison for positive change for District 17 and our community.
* Constructive, transparent communication and understanding between the Fire Fighters, the Commissioners and the residents of our community.

* Promotion of up-to-date public awareness and knowledge of our First Responders’ working conditions.

* A lack of adequate funding sources to provide a safe working environment that not only trains volunteers but offers a fair contract for graduates that enhances their opportunities and encourages new employees to remain serving in their community.
Good, constructive communication between the career fire fighters and the commissioners- so that the public can become well informed and can then be counted on to support the much needed additional sources of funding.
I have extensive work experience in public service employment. I am experienced in working with Union contracts and was on the first Union negotiating committee at WSDOT in 2005. I worked for over 16 years in contract maintenance and review for WSDOT. I have over seven years' experience in fundraising at the state level. As a small business owner, for over 22 years- with offices in both Thurston and Pierce Counties I understand the priorities necessary for good fiscal responsibility and budget management. With my years of public service including experience with Public Information Requests and years of education in communication- I will promote open communication and appreciation for and with our hard-working District 17 support staff, create an open-door commissioner policy for great collaboration with our Fire Fighters, their Union and with our community residents!
