Kitsap South Kitsap School District No. 402 Director District 3

4-year term No Salary, some districts offer small per diem for evening meetings. School Board Members or “directors” – are the elected governing body of the school district, serving four-year terms. The school board’s governance responsibilities fall in four major areas: Vision – focuses the work on student achievement through a comprehensive strategic planning process; Structure – provides prudent financial planning and oversight; diligent and innovative policymaking; Accountability – sets specific goals and a process for evaluation, reporting and recommendations for improvements; and Advocacy – champions public education in the local community and before state and federal policy makers. The School Board sets the general policies of the district, which are implemented by the hired professional district Superintendent and certificated teaching staff and personnel. One of the critical duties is the adoption of the district's budget and proposal of any school levies to be placed on the ballot to the people. The commission sets policies and approves all spending via the budget. The council also sets salaries for district employees.

Experience (300 characters max) I have spent over 30 years working for our next generation of leaders. I have held the position of School Board Director almost 12 years. I have held all chair position of PTA/PTSO through K-12 grades. I have donated thousands of hours supporting education. I have held all positions on the Board
growth and housing students in safe well maintained building.
Charter Schools are a good option for some districts. However they should be under the control of a locally elected board.
Testing is needed but not over testing. I am all about the right amount of testing to enable educators to do the best for every student.
Start/bell times are dependent on getting students to schools effectively. Yes I would agree that a later start for middle and high school is a good idea it is but a piece of the equation. Our district spends millions on transportation and we have one of the best transportation departments. The same buses are used for every student at deferent times for effect safe delivery. What is necessary is a conversation with parents and students to ensure they get the proper rest and come prepared to learn.
The nation, state, and South Kitsap are at all time highs for on time graduation. We have set an goals and work hard to get each student to become a graduate. It is not a sin to extend the graduation for some all students do not learn at the same pace. Also there are many reasons that some just cannot make on time. Washington now has a 24 credit graduation requirement up from 18. Districts are changing the amount of periods in the day and offering extended days to help students attain this credit requirement. The key is offering each student a clear pathway they enjoy coming to school to attain. Offer as many class types as possible.
Respect must be practiced each day. When it is not it must be addressed ASAP. We have programs designed to prevent and address this type of behavior. Communication with parents student and staff must take place and action plans established and followed up on.
School Board Directors lead the district through the Superintendent. I work hard as a Board member to ensure all laws are followed and the Board get reports on its implementation progress.
We have come a long ways on Suspension. Suspension only makes some bad behavior and participation worse. Many times this is the last possible outcome. We have a staff member assigned to actively participate in this area to ensure Equity and a solution that makes sense for the student not the adults. However there will be some occasions where suspension is necessary while working on a solution that is best for the safety of the student and her/his classmates.
