Experience (300 characters max) I have served as a Port Orchard City Council Member since 2006. Work Experience: I work in communications for the Washington State Department of Transportation, and also worked in software development, and home video marketing and public relations. Community Service: I have been a member
Our streets, roads, sewer and water mains have increasing maintenance requirements with our limited funding. As council member, I have focused on addressing these basic needs by supporting the funding of our transportation projects, large and small.
We need to continue discussing the issues with agencies and the public, bringing greater awareness and understanding of the issues and existing resources facing the homeless. Although existing resources are limited, many do not know of their existence. In my time on the council, I have been on the city’s ad hoc committee and saw the establishment of severe weather shelter in the downtown area.
As a member of the council, I always make decisions that are thoughtful to people living on fixed incomes, including senior citizens. I am committed to making sure people who live in and love our community can stay here and are never forced out due to rent or utility rate increases. I also include their needs in discussions about community centers, which should be mindful of activities for seniors.
I stand with our police department in making sure Port Orchard is a safe place for everyone to live, regardless of immigration status. No one should be afraid to contact law enforcement in a dangerous or life threatening situation, and I plan to continue supporting all of our citizens should this become an issue in our city.
Port Orchard's largest challenges are a lack of local jobs, transportation and utility systems that are being outgrown, and perceived lack of amenities (e.g. underdeveloped downtown/waterfront, parks, community centers, big box retail stores). As a member of the council, I have been focused on insurance that transportation is able to help people get to work.
From what I am hearing from many residents in various locations around the city, the underdeveloped downtown is a major concern. All residents love our location and the setting of the waterfront, and would like to visit it more often. Some are sad when they feel they need to take their visitors to restaurants or shopping in nearby towns as they feel our downtown area is not a destination.
As council member, I have practiced continual and open communication with our council and staff. If re-elected, I plan to improve communication by creating avenues where it is easier for people to contact and interact with me and the council.
