Challenges at local and Regional level are Transportation, Growth, Affordability for housing, Education.
About 8000 people moved into our region last year . This challenges us to provide welcoming communities where families can have access to school and jobs. We must accommodate growth in order to be welcoming and inclusive.
Transportation challenges we must address are 405 tolls, the Legislature created a pilot program for I- 405 tolls, the 2 years is coming to a close in 2018. The toll road must meet 2 standards: generate enough money to cover maintenance and operation and average traffic in toll lanes must average 45mph 90% in peak commutes. if these standards are not met the toll are to be terminated.
Growth: we must retain the culture of Bothell, while welcoming our new families and secure safe streets, parks, quality educational opportunities.
Bothell has a long history of working together to solve problems, I have been a part of that culture 1963- present.
I was a member of the initiative to bring Evergreen hospital to our region. We worked together and were successful because of our guilds, we established the need for a hospital in our region and educated the public to the need for access to medical care in our region.
In 1995 the Legislature made the decision to site the University of Washington Bothell and Cascade College in Bothell, I was part of the team who worked together to secure the Truly Farm. It was a group effort and a competitive field. I was proud to be a part of that team.
Bothell needs to elect a leader who can create a public private partnership of leaders from business, labor, the environmental community, police, fire, nonprofits and other groups to find solutions for homelessness, mental health, and drug abuse.
Working with Master builders to address a balance in housing and low income housing.
The Northshore Senior Center is the largest in King County and serves our senior across our City and Counties and beyond. It must have a strong Director who is supported by the community and businesses. We have had a turn over in the last few years, we must be supportive and involved with our senior and their activities.
I was instrumental in creating a ombudsman for our special needs families across the State for our schools. I would like to investigate the needs of our seniors and evaluate the need for a ombudsman, a person who can assist our seniors, disabled and minorities to navigate the system or advocate for them.Aperson who can direct them to resources available within their communities.
Bothell is community of diverse families and we should celebrate our differences and values. We should respect each others journey to America and provide support to citizenship. My Father was a immigrant from Italy and my Mother 1st generation from Lebanon, I am proud of my heritage and want to support and celebrate all the cultures and our values.
A path to citizenship is critical for our children and families we must lobby our Congressional leaders to establish that path.
As a member of the Senate Minority Caucus, I understand the problems our minority families and businesses face.
Other issues that need our attention as a City Councilor:
Support for staff at our City Hall. We have experienced a abrupt change in our City Manager and Assistant City Manager, this divided our community and threaten staff security. Staff needs our support.
Parking is alarming issue for our Main Street and surrounding neighborhoods and businesses. Bothell"s park and ride lot is old and to small to support our growth. The UWB and Cascade College need more parking for their Students and staff. I look forward to working with the parking group who are meeting to resolve these parking problems.
Access to Main Street from UWB and CC is important for our student and staff. Our Businesses and Restaurants on Main Street and surrounding areas would benefit from a walkable route or bike sharing. Parking problems prevent this access currently.
Snohomish County residents need access to family friendly shopping and parks, places where families can shop and meet together as a community
Urgency is in the eye of the beholder.
As a small business owner I feel my needs are critical for my business to be successful.
As a Mother of 6 children, 2 who have dyslexia, I feel children's opportunity to learn is urgent.
As a family, my husband Jim and I feel it is urgent that we leave a legacy for future generation by protecting Wayne Golf Course and create a park where all families can benefit from environmental and recreational opportunities. I also have supported legislatively North Creek Forest. And will work to secure funds for Shelton View Forest.
Transportation is a on going issue and is urgent to our regions.
Low income housing is urgent for our region, our families need to be able to afford live and work in our communities.
Safe communities are urgent for our families: we must address homelessness, mental, illness and drug abuse
Economic development is urgent to a strong City
I will work to identify my Mayor and City Council members goals, I will share my goals and work to help each of us to succeed together.
Together we can make a difference.
