4-year term No Salary, some districts offer small per diem for evening meetings. School Board Members or “directors” – are the elected governing body of the school district, serving four-year terms. The school board’s governance responsibilities fall in four major areas: Vision – focuses the work on student achievement through a comprehensive strategic planning process; Structure – provides prudent financial planning and oversight; diligent and innovative policymaking; Accountability – sets specific goals and a process for evaluation, reporting and recommendations for improvements; and Advocacy – champions public education in the local community and before state and federal policy makers. The School Board sets the general policies of the district, which are implemented by the hired professional district Superintendent and certificated teaching staff and personnel. One of the critical duties is the adoption of the district's budget and proposal of any school levies to be placed on the ballot to the people. The commission sets policies and approves all spending via the budget. The council also sets salaries for district employees.

I oppose using public funds for Charter Schools.
I believe valid and reliable standardized testing is basic skills is an important part, but only one part, of diagnosing students' needs. If test results are not used effectively there is no need for testing.
I understand adolescents' needs for rest and sleep. Our district has been as responsive as possible to those needs by having later start times. This is currently an issue that staff is studying.
Appropriate preschool programs and assuring the attainment of basic skills in reading and math prior to 4th grade are the best ways for assuring on-time graduation rates. A student who is successful in elementary school is more likely to graduate on time from high school. Individual academic planning starting in upper elementary grades and following each student through middle and high school is also extremely important.
This is a subject that should be addressed by parents and schools as soon as a child begins to play and work with other children. Teaching respect for self and others is the key to stopping bullying. All school personnel should be encouraged to respect and protect children from those who would harm them either physically or emotionally.

I believe that all students have a right to a positive and safe learning environment. When a student becomes so disruptive that others cannot learn, they should be removed from the classroom. In-school suspension is an effective way to deal with this problem. The length of out-of-class time should be as brief as possible and be based on the developmental level of each student who is suspended.
