King County Fire Protection District No. 16 Commissioner Position No. 1

6-year term; No salary. A Fire District is responsible for fire response and containment and for emergency medical services. The commission sets the general policies of the district, which are implemented by the hired professional fire chief and fire district personnel. One of commission's main duties is the adoption of the district's budget and proposal of any fire levies to be placed on the ballot to the people. The commission sets policies and approves all spending via the budget, whether for operations or capital items or public facility maintenance and improvements. The council also sets salaries for district employees.

I have dedicated my life to the Fire Service, serving 30 years with the Seattle Fire Department, 14 years as a Battalion and Safety Chief. Since retiring I have continued to participate with the Fire Service, working with the Duval Fire Department writing their Safety Policy, and currently as a Consultant for the Promotional Processes with the Seattle Fire Department. I’ve lived here in this community for 17 years. I’ve always wanted to give back to our community. But while working, I averaged 60+ hours a week and was unable to find the necessary time. Now that I am retired, running for the position of Fire Commission is a wonderful opportunity for me. I have talked with the current Fire Commissioners and feel my Fire Service background will provide the perfect balance on the Commissioner Board. I will be able to provide specific insight and knowledge to the day-to-day operations. I am endorsed by the Northshore Firefighters Union
1. Growth – Just today Kenmore was front page news in the Seattle Times. The article talked about the tremendous growth opportunity and how surprising it was that large development hadn’t already happened in the Kenmore area. Currently our Fire District maintains only 2 Fire Stations with an on-duty strength of 7 Firefighters and 2 Paramedics. I believe the time is going to shortly come that we will need to increase the size and coverage for our Fire District; increasing both the staffing levels and most like added Fire Stations. 2. Training- As with all Fire Departments, training plays the biggest key role in developing the skills of our Firefighters which directly impact the quality of service to our citizens. Training costs both time and money. I realize the importance of a high quality training programs and will continue to support the Department's efforts 3. Budget- Everything is affected and governed by our budget. We have to ensure we receive the necessary funds.
Growth - From my experience with the Seattle Fire Department I have seen first-hand the challenges the Fire Department faces with the increase in development and density in the City of Seattle. The increase in population is vastly outpacing the current staffing levels and funding for the Fire Department. Downtown companies are averaging 5000 runs a years. The Aid Cars are averaging about 7000 runs a years. This puts a huge demand on both staffing and resources. I believe our area is prime for increase in density. Look at Bothell now compared to 2-3 years ago. Six story apartment buildings now stand where 1 story structure stood before. My experience tells me that typically Public Safety such as Police and Fire are challenge to provide the same level of service as population and density quickly increase. We need to focus on a plan that carries forward 5-10 years from now and anticipate a larger Department that will provide the necessary services
My unique qualities come from my 34+ years experience in the Fire Service. In addition to serving with the Seattle Fire Department, I also had the opportunity to serve on multiple National committees such as a Primary Member of the NFPS 1400 committee focusing on Training Standards. I am a Certified Safety Officer. Certified Safety Specialist and Technician. I have managed and budgeted major training programs - training programs for the entire Operations Division - 800 members plus. Programs lasting multiple months with $200K budgets, and 50-60 member training staff. In addition, I served 10 years and as Union President and Executive Board member. Negotiating contracts and labor issues directly with the City of Seattle. I have an excellent understanding of Administration and labor relationships. logo
