Do you support the proposed new City Charter? Why or why not?
Do you support privatizing any part of school operations? Why or why not?
If you were to write a school transportation policy, what would be your key components?

Yes. I fully support the process and final recommendation of the democratically elected Charter Commission. Newton voters have made clear that reducing the size of City Council, establishing term limits for each branch of government as well as updating many areas of government operations are critical to ensuring Newton's future. Our current system is cumbersome. Important initiatives both complex (zoning reform) and simple (accessory apartments) get mired in process without clear end points.
Privatizing public services is a decision of last resort. Often it seems a simple answer to a complex set of circumstances. I believe in fully evaluating and analyzing all aspects of an operation, asking good questions, getting advice from experts and seeking solutions that work for all parties: employees, students, facilities, and administration and are possible within the reasonable constraints of a public school budget. Privatizing should not be done for strictly budgetary reasons.
The goals are to enable students and families to travel to and from school safely and efficiently and promote student independence, health and quality social interactions. Promote alternatives to the single family car by making walking, biking and riding the bus easy and fun and using a single family car difficult. Good sidewalk and crosswalk infrastructure. Separate lanes/entrances for busses. Designing spaces for people not cars. District leadership promoting walking and riding the bus.
