Having been a resident of Malta for over 25 years and working for the school district has allowed me to see the rapid growth and the problems that can come along with poorly planned development. I raised my children here and my parents retired here. I would like other families to have the same privilege.
By being accessible to everyone in the community. By keeping informed and seeking out information related to Malta and sharing that information with the community.
Over development. Poorly thought out development is a threat to our quality of life affecting the entire community at all economic levels. People should be able to afford to live in the community where they work. There should be jobs available to the people that live in the community. Lack of affordable housing while still encouraging commercial development isn't good for anyone. Not the people or the businesses in the community. Developers should be encouraged to build homes that would be feasible to many income levels. Thus attracting people that businesses will employ.
The 2% tax cap is a “safety valve” that would protect property owners from a significant rise in property taxes in a single year. This “safety valve” is especially important to people on fixed incomes and business that budget for their annual town and county property taxes and a significant rise in one year would be fiscally devastating. I believe that through proper planning and efficiency in government we can avoid unexpected increases in the Town’s budget and avoid rapid and unexpected tax increases. In my view Malta’s heavy reliance on shared sales tax revenues is risky in that an unexpected down turn in sales tax revenues by the County could have a significant impact on the Town’s budget necessitating a Town to make up the difference.

I have been a resident of Malta for more than 30 years. In that time I have been an active member of the community. I have served on the Board of Assessment Review, the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Malta Youth Commission. I have worked as Deputy Town Clerk, Assessment Data Collector and Webmaster. I have regularly attended town meetings for many years. I believe that my experience makes me uniquely qualified. I also take every opportunity to talk to residents often and make an effort to understand all sides of any issue.
I think that any significant policy decisions need to be made in an open arena. Malta is home to people from all over the world. These residents have ideas and skills that we should tap into. I hope that we can get anyone who wants to be involved, empowered to help keep Malta a great place to live, work and raise a family.
Growth and development in Malta is one of the most significant issues. We need to find a balance between smart growth and at the same time maintain our quality of life. Commercial growth will help ensure our fiscal health, help keep our taxes manageable. While development is important to our fiscal health, I support the protection of our rural areas. I think it is important that we protect our farms and open spaces. This delicate balance will help to maintain great quality of life in Malta.

Another issue facing our town, is to make sure that our emergency services have the resources that they need to perform their functions. An issue facing them is to attract, train and retain quality volunteers.
