Public safety is the #1 challenge facing Mt. Vernon. The relationship between our police officers and residents is critical to improving public safety. I’d like to reach out to different stakeholders to build these relationships while also prioritizing resources to reduce violent crime and tackle recidivism by improving wraparound services. Training and continued professional development is also needed to sustain continuous improvements in public safety.
Fair and affordable housing needs to be viewed more broadly as increasing the affordability of neighborhoods. Currently Mt. Vernon suffers from services deficits, meaning residents need to leave the city to have access to services not available in the city or within walking distance. This makes it less affordable to live in Mt. Vernon. I’m committed to designing a plan that focuses on creating more complete neighborhoods that favors walkability and access to public transportation.

Prior Civic Service Angela has been campaigning for a comprehensive city plan, an end to tax PILOTS for affordable housing developers, school board and administration accountability, communication between city agencies, protecting and increasing green space, shareholder engagement and an alternative to housing as an economic development. She works with neighborhood associations, grassroot organizations, and volunteers between school and the community.

Residential developments approved for tax PILOTS (payment in lieu of taxes) do not bring permanent jobs, only an increase in permanent residents who are not being paid for. The schools, roads, and public safety infrastructure are burdened and failing. Homeowners and landlords are forced to pay the heavy increase in taxes, seniors can’t afford to stay in their homes, and this is the continuing vision of the incumbent party. Mount Vernon needs leadership with a New Vision.
Mount Vernon has more affordable housing than the surrounding municipalities. Many of these affordable housing developments were given tax PILOTS, and the residents have little or no access to services. Mount Vernon is the 2nd most densely populated city in the state. Until we upgrade our infrastructure, and finalize a comprehensive plan, it is unfair to the current and future residents of Mount Vernon to approve any more affordable housing, especially with tax breaks in the form of PILOTS.
