4-year termNo Salary, some districts offer small per diem for evening meetings. School Board Members or “directors” – are the elected governing body of the school district, serving four-year terms. The school board’s governance responsibilities fall in four major areas: Vision – focuses the work on student achievement through a comprehensive strategic planning process; Structure – provides prudent financial planning and oversight; diligent and innovative policymaking; Accountability – sets specific goals and a process for evaluation, reporting and recommendations for improvements; and Advocacy – champions public education in the local community and before state and federal policy makers. The School Board sets the general policies of the district, which are implemented by the hired professional district Superintendent and certificated teaching staff and personnel. One of the critical duties is the adoption of the district's budget and proposal of any school levies to be placed on the ballot to the people. The commission sets policies and approves all spending via the budget. The council also sets salaries for district employees.

Experience (300 characters max) US Navy as a Meteorologist and Oceanographer. Marketing/Outreach manager for the Sno-Isle Natural Foods Co-op. PTSA officer and volunteer in MSD. Worked in Cedarcrest Middle school, ACE and ISC. Currently, secretary at Grove Elementary.
I would like to see our school district move to a student centered education (SCE). There is a lack of trust in our community, we need to rebuild this, work on relationships, and to give our students an authentic voice in their education. SCE addresses school safety, respect, rigor, and it can be done without spending money.
I am for Charter schools. I like that it allows autonomy. Nobody knows our students and their needs better than staff. Charters allow for staff to be creative and the ability to make decisions that meets their school needs.
We test our students too much. Standardized testing gives false data, and expensive. We can make better use of our tight budget. Personalized and project based learning provide students with more challenges, and they can apply their skills to real world issues. It gives a better picture of the student and their capabilities.
The Marysville school district moved our high school start time to 7:25 am. It is not too early, but provides students a little more time to rest as well as, not have to wait for the bus too early.
We need to have schools that engages our students. Give them schools that they want to be at, where they have abilities to make decisions and buy-in. Provide a positive culture, where everyone is welcomed. Trust to be a building block to working relationships between students and student/staff. There needs to be more accountability in our middle school. They need to be smaller or increased in staff, so there is more focus on their success. Not passing classes should have repercussions.
Build a positive school culture, where everyone is welcomed. Is it possible? Yes. I have worked in a school that welcomed everybody, regardless of race, abilities and gender.
Aside, from just the class. There should be more project based learning, where students worked more in their community. Perhaps more job shadowing, internships and volunteer work. All levels can volunteer in their community and take on projects to improve our community.
This would be dependent on what occurred. Suspensions don't work if the student comes from an environment that punishes regardless. Use of retribution and community service would be more effective. Suspension should be the very last form of punishment, if even needed. Sometimes the student just needs someone to talk too, or time out to cool off on their own outside. It's about respect, trust and relationship.
