Integrity, fairness and impartiality. The ability of a judge to listen and take each case on a case-by-case basis. As my current career provides me the opportunity to be in court on a regular basis and hear so many cases, one cannot assume that one has "heard it before". Every case has its own set of unique facts, and a judge must listen to each case as though they have never heard it before, yet use their experience and knowledge to properly rule on the case.
I would recuse myself from any case that would be a conflict of interest. These cases may include but are not limited to those involving family members, personal friends, cases that I have worked on prior to my taking office, or any case that I had prior personal knowledge or involvement with.
As a Magisterial District Judge, I would inform people of their rights to an attorney, and if they cannot afford an attorney, one would be appointed for them. I would provide them with the written contact information, as well as verbally inform them of how to get in touch with the Public Defender's Office. Upon their preliminary arraignment, I would allow them to make a phone call to inform their family or attorney of where they are. Treat all persons fairly, impartially and with respect.
