The 5-member Board sets the policy for the county, determining the strategic vision for the county, appoints a county manager, attorney and others to serve the county, adopts ordinances, including zoning, and establishes an annual budget, which includes setting the tax rate and calling bond referendums. Commissioners are elected at-large in partisan elections in even-numbered years; all serve staggered 4-year terms.

My roles over my 12 year career at my company have all been very detail oriented. I have always had a role where my job is to maintain the integrity of information in a patient's medical record. Mistakes could result in things like delayed/ incorrect billing or HIPAA violations. In my current role, I am responsible for catching errors and protecting the integrity of the systems I oversee. My role requires sound judgment, accountability, and the ability to identify problems and recommend solutions. I am newer to civic involvement but I bring fresh eyes, genuine investment in this community, and an independent work ethic that would help me serve this county.
The jail. Our current facility is years overdue for a replacement. The foundation is cracking, the locks are failing on some cells, the facility is regularly over capacity, and the conditions are inhumane. 20 years ago it was estimated we would need a 500+ bed by 2025. In 2026 the commissioners are only voting to build a 500 bed facility with a core capacity of 600 beds. It will still be years before this is funded and built. The commissioners need to make the difficult decision to spend the money to build a bigger facility. If not, it will be over capacity from day one and we will be exactly where we have been for the last 20 years.
The County Commissioners have asked the Board of Education for a line item budget. To my knowledge, that has still not been provided. The BOE needs to present their budget so there is transparency about how the funds are being spent. That would impact how I view any future funding. I am not saying to cut funding to public schools. Just that the BOE needs to provide that information to help the commissioners better determine what funds are needed. The state needs to stop providing private school vouchers to families that over over a certain financial threshold. Those funds are being diverted away from the public school system.
Union County is 90% residential which puts the financial burden on the residents. We need to grow our commercial/ industrial development to increase tax revenue from those sources. We also need to make sure we are bringing in business that benefits the community. Companies that will hire from the community and businesses that residents will want to patronize.
The county and municipalities need to work together to address the growing homeless population in our area. Homelessness is rising nationwide. We need to work on affordable housing, public transportation so people can get to jobs, services to bring food to disabled/ elderly residents, and community health programs.
