Why are you running for the Board of Education and what are your top three priorities that you intend to accomplish if elected?

When a parent's request to remove a library book conflicts with the professional judgment of educators who contend the work has literary merit or is a book that is personally beneficial to students, whose judgment should carry more weight?

If elected, would you support, oppose, or seek to modify the district's current book-restriction process? What would 'getting it right' look like to you a year from now?

Setting salary aside, what's one specific change you'd make to working conditions, class sizes, or support staff to keep teachers from leaving?

How should the Board of Education address disparities among schools within the district in terms of academic achievement, student development, and meeting the needs of diverse student populations, such as English language learners, low-income students, and students with special needs

I am running because District 3 deserves a board member who understands both the classroom and the responsibility of public leadership. As a former educator and law school graduate, I want decisions driven by student outcomes, accountability, and common sense. My priorities are raising academic achievement, retaining strong teachers, and restoring public trust. But accountability must measure real learning, not create incentives to manufacture improvement. As a teacher, I saw how pressure around metrics could encourage people to improve the number instead of the education. We need multiple measures, transparent data, and accountability that rewards genuine student growth.
Neither side should automatically “win.” Parents have a legitimate right to raise concerns about what their children can access, and educators bring professional training and knowledge of literature, instruction, and student development. The board’s job is to use a fair, transparent review process that considers age appropriateness, educational value, legal standards, and community concerns. I would oppose blanket censorship and also reject the idea that every challenged book must remain. The goal should be thoughtful review, clear standards, and decisions that respect both families and professional judgment.
I would seek to improve the current process so it is clear, consistent, transparent, and legally sound. A year from now, “getting it right” would mean every challenge is reviewed under published standards, by a balanced committee, within a defined timeline, with written reasons for each decision and a meaningful appeal process. Reviews should focus on the specific material, age appropriateness, educational value, and the law, not political pressure. Parents should have choices for their own children, but one objection should not automatically determine access for every family in the district.
I would give teachers back more time to teach. Too many educators leave because they are overwhelmed by paperwork, unnecessary meetings, behavior issues, and responsibilities that pull them away from instruction. I would push for stronger classroom support, especially additional instructional assistants and behavioral support where the need is greatest. As a former classroom teacher, I understand that working conditions matter. When teachers have real support, manageable classrooms, and administrators who respect their professional judgment, they are more likely to stay and students benefit.
Equal funding does not always mean equal opportunity. The Board should use student achievement, staffing, enrollment, poverty, special education, and language needs to direct resources where they will have the greatest impact. Schools facing greater challenges may need smaller intervention groups, additional specialists, tutoring, counselors, and stronger family support. We also need measurable goals and public reporting so we know whether those investments are working. A child’s ZIP code, disability, income, or language should never determine the quality of education that child receives.
