Sea Bright Borough Council - Unexpired Term

SEA BRIGHT BOROUGH COUNCIL – Two Year Unexpired Term - Vote for OneSea Bright is governed under the Borough form of New Jersey municipal government. The governing body consists of a Mayor and a six-member Borough Council, with all positions elected at-large on a partisan basis at the November general election. A Mayor is elected directly by the voters to a four-year term of office. Council members are elected to serve three-year terms on a staggered basis, with two seats coming up for election each year in a three-year cycle. The Borough form of government used by Sea Bright is a "weak mayor / strong council" government in which council members act as the legislative body with the mayor presiding at meetings and voting only in the event of a tie. The mayor can veto ordinances subject to an override by a two-thirds majority vote of the council. The mayor makes committee and liaison assignments for council members, and most appointments are made by the mayor with the advice and consent of the council.

Sea Bright is a wonderful place to live. Because we are between the river and the ocean, we face flooding. Finding an equitable solution for all our residents is paramount. We do not have schools in our town so we need to ensure that we find the best schools and negotiate the best contracts. Children are our future; we must do everything possible to ensure their success. Finally, parking is limited and thus a chronic problem for many.
My profession, pediatric infectious disease specialist, has given me years of interactions with children and families. I have learned the skills of listening to understand and observing to judge responses. I served as the Chair of Pediatrics for 20 years and learned to manage a team of wonderful pediatricians and pediatric specialists. I spent 4 years at the Department of Health during the pandemic. Again, my listening skills broadened, and I learned about management in a government setting. I have been elected to office in the hospitals where I have practiced, both at St. Christopher's Hospital for Children in Philadelphia and at Monmouth Medical Center. Serving as President of the Medical Staff and on the Boards of these hospitals has given me experience in dealing with a variety of problems and a range of people. I have always been a firm believer in the ability of teams to succeed when everyone works together. Finally, I am a teacher; I teach at the medical student level to subspecialist training. I participate both as a learner and a teacher in continuing medical education here in the United States and internationally. It is said that to teach is to learn twice. I firmly believe this. All of these experiences have prepared me to serve on the Sea Bright Council.
Sea Bright has a beautiful beach; the town has done much to preserve and enhance the beach. This must be an ongoing and never-ending job. The small park next to the bridge downtown has been a lovely addition. It is well kept and well worth keeping. Because of our flooding problem, I feel we must find equitable solutions which will benefit the entire town. Our town already does a superb job of trash collection and street cleaning. I hope the recycling system is actually working. Renewal of resources will always be important for Sea Bright.
Our community has recovered very well after superstorm Sandy. We now need to sustain our efforts and ensure everyone in town benefits from our fantastic location and our wonderful town events. We must continue to ensure the beach is a place for everyone to enjoy. And again, we must find ways to mitigate flooding that benefit everyone in the community. As we continue to have new housing and as we welcome visitors to our town, we must ensure there is equitable parking. Our police and fire departments are already superb. We must continue to support them and ensure they have the equipment they need to keep us safe. As our town continues to develop, I hope we will continue to sponsor events both on the beach and in town. Events must be open and inviting for everyone. We must ensure Sea Bright stays the wonderful place it already is.
