Primary duties include adopting the annual municipal budget, setting local tax rates and utility fees, approving capital infrastructure projects, and making decisive votes on land use, zoning changes, and annexations. Council members also provide vital oversight of municipal operations, approve city contracts and board appointments, and serve as accessible liaisons for constituents to resolve neighborhood issues regarding infrastructure, public safety, and city services.
Serving as a Planning Commissioner provides direct, day-one preparation for City Council because you have already spent years making consequential municipal decisions under public scrutiny. In that role, you have thoroughly evaluated zoning codes, subdivision plats, traffic impacts, drainage requirements, and comprehensive land-use plans, learning how to foster economic growth while protecting existing neighborhoods from infrastructure strain.
