I think that policies may not be the answer to screen time regulation. Different courses may require different levels of screen time. For example, a Coding class could require the entire class period on a screen, while a math class or vocational (hands-on type) class may demand no screen time.
While I certainly feel that screen time, as a general rule, should be reduced, the teacher should be the leader in this reduction.
AI has entered nearly every aspect of today’s world to some extent. However, we must not lose sight of the fact that we must remain focused on the task of preparing our students to make decisions based upon common sense and basic principles of education that we have taught for many generations. No matter how much AI influences tomorrow, basic understanding and common sense will always remain a priority in every walk of life.
While students will be surrounded by AI and its influence, we are responsible for preparing our students to face the challenges of life and real-world experiences by never losing focus on the basics.
I feel that charter schools are here to stay. With that said, a School Board must assure that the public schools that they represent are focused on educating all students in the district. The Board should certainly assess the enrollment and trends in all schools within the district and make every effort to understand any major changes in student enrollment. The enrollment will be the major factor governing the budget, so understanding enrollment, population shifts/growth/decline will enable the School Board to manage its budget effectively.
The main responsibilities of the School Board are to hire/fire the Superintendent; assure that all policies are in place, enforceable and appropriate; and adopt a working and responsible budget.
Assurance of having a leader that will guide the district in the right direction will certainly have a positive effect on teacher retention as it trickles down through the district staff. With that said I could give a long list of items that would address teacher appreciation, teacher concerns and improving school climate for all staff. However, the School Board should not be involved in micromanaging the daily operations of the district.
Having a budget that includes competitive pay for teachers will assist with recruitment.
