I am Maicol Rivera Torres, a Pontiac community advocate, entrepreneur, nonprofit leader, and longtime supporter of youth. I am running for the Pontiac School Board because I believe every student deserves a safe, welcoming school where they can learn, grow, and reach their full potential. As a former special education student, I understand personally how important it is for students to receive the support, respect, resources, and opportunities they need.
My experience includes operating a local technology business, leading a nonprofit, developing youth employment and internship opportunities, working with families and community organizations, and managing budgets, technology, programs, and partnerships. I will bring a business-minded approach, independent thinking, accountability, transparency, and a willingness to ask difficult questions. Most importantly, I will listen to students, parents, educators, staff, and residents and work collaboratively to rebuild trust and improve outcome
My top three priorities are student achievement and attendance, safe and supportive schools, and accountability and community trust.
First, we must improve academic outcomes and attendance. I will push for measurable goals, early intervention for struggling students, stronger special education services, tutoring and career/technology opportunities, and partnerships that help remove barriers keeping students from school.
Second, students and staff deserve safe, respectful learning environments. I will support effective anti-bullying measures, mental-health and behavioral supports, appropriate staffing, and consistent safety procedures while making sure students and families are heard.
Third, we must rebuild public trust through transparency and responsible stewardship. I will closely review spending, contracts and performance data; ask questions before voting; strengthen public reporting; and expand meaningful parent, student, staff and community participation. I am a Pontiac School District parent, entrepreneur, nonprofit leader, and community advocate who is deeply invested in the future of our children and our district. I am running for School Board because I believe Pontiac students deserve representation that prioritizes their academic success, social development and emotional well being.
I bring experience in leadership, organizational management, community engagement, advocacy, partnership development, and navigating complex challenges. As a mother in the district, I understand firsthand the importance of accessible communication and meaningful parent involvement. I am committed to improving academic outcomes, advocating for student-centered decisions that consider the whole child, and empowering parents to better advocate for and support their children.
I adovate like a mom. I fight like a mom. And if I am elected, I will govern like a mom-- putting our students first and always.
The three priority issues I would address are academic achievement, student well-being, and parent engagement.
1. Improve academic outcomes:I would begin with an honest analysis of district testing and performance data, evaluate curriculum and student supports, and establish measurable goals for improvement. I would also advocate for stronger special education supports and accountability for delivering services outlined in IEPs and 504 plans.
2. Advocate for student-centered decisions: Every major decision should answer, “How will this impact our students?” I would ensure academic success, social development, emotional well-being, and stability are considered. I will ensure budgets and expendiatures are in alignment with student prioritization and success.
3. Empower parents: I would improve access to timely information, strengthen district communication, and establish regular parent listening sessions so families can participate meaningfully in decisions affecting their children.
