I am a product of public education having graduated from Kimball High School, the University of Michigan, and Wayne State University. I have training as a grades 6-12 educator and taught briefly before realizing that teaching was not my calling. I have been a resident of Madison Heights for 19 years and a parent for 14 years. My two children attend Lamphere Schools. As a parent and member of the school board, I have a vested interest in making sure that our district provides a quality education to its students. I understand the difficult and valuable job that district employees are doing and want to make sure they are supported. Personal qualities that I would bring to the position include my ability to think logically and not make snap decisions based on emotions, strong communication skills, and experience working with people of diverse backgrounds and ages. This is currently my third year on the school board. I am proud of the work we are currently doing and want to continue.
1. Making sure our schools are a safe place to learn and work.
We can do this by staying up to date on security protocols and providing training to students and staff, as well as providing mental health support to all.
2. Providing a quality education to our students. Test scores are only one measure of student success; we must provide support for students who are struggling as well as encouraging and challenging our students who are achieving above their goals. We need to continue supporting our teachers with up-to-date curriculum and professional education.
3. Maintaining aging buildings. We have done an audit of our buildings and know that we need to make significant updates in our infrastructure. We have had two bond proposals fail; I am hopeful that the proposal this fall is approved by voters. Everyone learns and works better when they are in a comfortable environment.
