My name is Scott Manning and I serve as the Senior Pastor of the Clawson and Rochester Hills St Luke's United Methodist Churches. I have a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration and Master of Divinity degrees. I have spent my life working in educational and nonprofit institutions and for the past 22 years as a clergy in Michigan.
I have previous experience serving on boards of education. During the early 1990s I served on a board of education in the central Michigan area during a time of great financial constraints and then in the 2010s I served on a board of education in southwest Michigan. In total I have had the opportunity to serve 9 years on two previous boards of education, learning the needs of students and community. I believe this experience brings an understanding of educational governance, policy development, and community bridge building that is necessary for schools to function and serve students and community, alike.
First priority is always the quality of education in the classroom. As a board member I understand my role in policy development and working with the administration to ensure that we are providing the resources in the classroom and the faculty necessary to maintain and increase the standards of education and opportunity for our students.
Another priority is continuing to improve the facilities our students have for learning and growing in community. The district has made strides in the improvement of facilities so that learning may take place and it is important that we continue to care for our infrastructure so that students and the wider community are safe and have place to learn, grow, and come together as community.
Longterm vision and planning. When a board engages with administration, staff and faculty, and community in long term visioning and planning, quality of education and staff/community relations can be strengthened. This includes multiyear calendaring.
I am a 20-year resident of Clawson and have served on the Clawson Board of Education for nearly 5 years. I was recently elected Board President by my peers and I have also served as Vice President. My husband and I have a son who just began his Sophomore year at Clawson High School. He has been a student in the district since Kindergarten so we’ve experienced firsthand all the district has to offer. I’m a passionate advocate for public education and believe that it is vital to a strong society, giving all children access to a quality education regardless of their background. Clawson is a truly special place where community is important and we see that reflected in our school district.
In my career as a Marketing professional, I align various stakeholders with clear communication, attention to detail, and collaboration to help our clients achieve their business goals. Those skills, combined with a passion for public education make me an effective board member and asset to the community.
Three main issues or focuses for our district are student success, declining enrollment and funding.
My focus is always on outcomes for our students. We want the absolute best for our community’s kids whether that means college, trade school, or employment. I’m proud of our focus on curriculum and resources for our students and will continue to advocate for the resources our students need to succeed.
Like most districts, Clawson faces the issue of declining enrollment. I will continue to drive enrollment by showcasing our wonderful educators, caring administrators and staff, and beautiful new facilities! I’m proud to have worked to pass the bonds that made the improvements possible and serve on the board who helped guide them to life.
School funding is an ever-present issue, particularly for small districts like Clawson. I will continue to advocate fiscal responsibility and making the most of our limited funds while maintaining fair compensation for our amazing staff.
