VOTE411 Voter Guide

Maricopa County Community College District 3

Community College BoardsThe community college district is governed by a board elected by voters in each Supervisorial District. The board reviews and adopts an annual budget, hires the chancellor, and approves high-dollar contracts, major program changes, compensation, and benefits. Funding, which comes from tuition, fees, property taxes, state aid (all except Maricopa and Pima), and donations, supports operations and capital needs. The board has final authority on fiscal policy, budget, employee contracts, capital expenditures, and tuition. The chancellor reports to the board. Why you should care:Community colleges serve county residents who can take classes, learn a trade, or earn an associate’s degree; some also offer bachelor's degrees. The job of the governing board in today’s educational realm is challenging because of the volatility of harsh economic conditions, divisive politics, the lack of state funding for the two largest community colleges (Maricopa and Pima), and rapidly changing governance and regulatory concerns. For additional information:https://www.azleg.gov/ars/15/01444.htm

Qualifications and Experience I am a retired educator of 35 years. I have a BS in elementary education, an MEd in Guidance and Counseling and an all but dissertation in Curriculum and Instruction. I taught elementary school, was a school counselor, a school principal and taught college. I taught child development to undergraduates and research to master's students. My school in Michigan was identified as exemplary by the state due to its state test scores. It was a title one school whose language arts, reading and math scores were in the 90 percentiles. A team of my teachers were invited to do workshops across the state about how we accomplished this. In addition, I was chosen principal of the year in Michigan by the National Science Teachers Association.
Endorsements Alex Kolodin - Warren Peterson - Maricopa County Community College Police Association and the Association of Police and Sheriffs.
Education Listed abouve
As a very successful educator with strong curriculum knowledge, I can use that to consider teaching strategies, effective assessment, and to ensure there is not DEI or SEL in the text books.
- a 1.7-billion-dollar budget that needs to be audited to ensure that it is being spent on items directly related to student success -bring back JUCO football -increase in enrollment -ensure all education of trades is being successfully addressed -ensure all medical careers such as phlebotomist, x-ray techs and other such positions are being successfully addressed
Everything in today's world is leaning towards technology. I think this would be the way to advertise the offerings of the community college. In addition, in bringing back JUCO I think that will aide this to a great degree. I would like to also partner with high schools that already have CTE classes and show them how they can take that, pursue education and the community college and end up with a successful career in less than 4 years.
As a school principal I managed a large budget, but I must say there were only a few categories I had any control over. The reason that we have a 3-person slate is for this purpose. John Crow owns his own companies and is keenly aware of managing successful budgets. Ryan Carrarciol is our tech person and I am the educator. It is strong team that covers all the experience that we need.
