Maine people increasingly cannot find health care where they live. Inland Hospital closed last year; at least ten hospital birthing centers have closed in a decade; and Maine Family Planning ended primary care at three rural clinics. That sends more patients farther from home into an already strained system. Housing presents the same problem: we are approving homes faster than we are completing them, while financing and infrastructure costs stall construction. Maine must preserve rural hospitals and maternity care, stabilize community health centers, recruit and retain providers, and invest enough in water, sewer, and affordable-housing financing to turn approved plans into actual homes.
Bangor is absorbing the consequences of health-care closures across northern and eastern Maine. EMMC is the region’s essential tertiary hospital, while PCHC—the state’s largest federally qualified health center—now needs $3 million within weeks to avoid cutting services or locations. Losing primary care elsewhere drives still more patients here. Housing construction is also lagging: Bangor completed only 82 homes in FY2026, while more than 3,000 households were on the public-housing waitlist, which closed to new applicants. Hermon families rely on the same providers and housing market. The state must stabilize PCHC, preserve rural care, and fund infrastructure and financing that gets workforce housing built.
I take the work seriously. I do my homework, listen to the people affected, and stay with difficult problems after the press conference is over. As chair of the Labor and Housing Committee in the 131st Legislature and chair of the Labor Committee in the 132nd, I brought people with very different interests to the table, moved complicated legislation forward, and turned strong values into workable law. I am a union member, adoptive mother, longtime educator and corporate trainer, and someone who understands working multiple jobs while serving the public. I will collaborate whenever collaboration can produce results, but I am not afraid to fight when working people or the communities I represent are being shortchange
