Candidate For Office
State Representative - Windsor-Orange-2
I am a dedicated community volunteer serving on multiple town committees and local boards. I have over nine years experience with regional planning commissions as finance manager where I was responsible for budget and audit preparation, grants management, payroll, and benefits administration. I've also worked with area nonprofits and institutions in finance and administrative support including the Vermont Law and Graduate School, the Vermont Land Trust and Northern Woodlands. I have a unique insight into how regional commissions, towns, schools, and nonprofits work hard to support our residents and make our communities more resilient and I am witness to the challenges faced as we are all asked to do more with less.
Opportunities to improve the quality of education begins providing basic needs support for families. When families struggle with housing, healthcare and food insecurity, students do not go to school ready to learn. Instead, students struggle with hunger, mental health needs and trauma. Local, community schools serve as the hearts of our communities. It is essential both for our children and for the flourishing of our small towns that these schools remain present and vibrant. We can strengthen our schools by making our communities more accessible to families through affordable housing, reduced healthcare costs and access to healthcare. Increased funding for district-wide math, science, and literacy instruction would be helpful.
To improve affordable housing development, I would like to increase support for Homes For All, CHIP infrastructure financing, Village and Downtown Tax Credit programs, down payment assistance, first-generation homebuyer grants and encouraging technical education for the building trades. Infill housing development in villages relies on infrastructure investment to improve public water and sewer access. S.325 works to encourage housing in designated growth areas while sustaining environmental protections in other areas to protect our forests, farms and rural landscapes. Public process could be improved to get greater buy-in and ideas from rural landowners as to how to preserve environmental protections while allowing for development.
