I'm a small business owner, a working parent, a Justice of the Peace and a school board member. I grew up right here in my district. I don't think that makes me more belong here more than anyone else, but there's something so special about standing up to serve the community that raised me. I understand our community, our sense of place and our unique needs. We are the people who make Vermont work; teachers, nurses, builders and artists. I believe that leadership means listening to understand, not trying to prove a point. Democracy works best the Vermont way, neighbors coming together to connect over shared values to help each other and take care of each other.
I currently serve on our local school board and we are the only school district in the state to still be without a voter approved budget. I have seen firsthand that the current funding system is broken and student opportunities and outcomes are determined by zip code. Our kids get less and less because our community cannot afford more taxes while kids in wealthier districts get more. If we are going to continue to fund education through property taxes, we must update and modernize how we classify and tax homes so that people pay what they can afford, lift the tax burden from the working class and give our kids the resources they deserve.
Zoning is done at the municipal level and each municipality has their own unique codes and regulations. Some have none, some have many. Some municipalities have everything written down, some rely on memory of the inspector. This can be challenging for developers to navigate and can add unexpected costs to projects. Zoning and permitting should be streamlined, reliable and predictable, easy to navigate and to understand so that building costs and timelines can be easily projected and budgeted. Municipalities need support and resources to update and modernize their zoning and permitting process.
