Candidate For Office electcarolinebright@gmail.com
My career has prepared me to serve people, solve problems, and bring different perspectives together. I’ve spent more than a decade as a union flight attendant, become an ordained Unitarian Universalist minister, and founded a small business in Franklin County. As a small business owner and mother of three young children, I experience firsthand the challenges Vermont families face with childcare, housing, healthcare, rising costs, and making work and family life fit together. Across my roles as a worker, employer, minister, parent, and community leader, I’ve learned to listen, navigate disagreement, ask good questions, and persist until I find solutions- skills I would bring to both legislating and constituent service.
Vermont must control education costs without treating school quality as expendable. I support reforming our funding system to reduce the unsustainable burden on property taxpayers while ensuring every child has access to excellent schools. We also have to address the underlying costs driving school budget- especially healthcare. Reducing healthcare costs for school employees and districts could relieve pressure on taxpayers without cutting teachers or student programs. We should also expand shared services where they produce real savings and address rising special education costs. I am open to consolidation where communities determine it improves education and efficiency, but I am completely opposed to forced school consolidation.
We can build the housing Vermont desperately needs without sacrificing the landscapes that make our state special. I support making it easier and faster to build housing in existing villages, downtowns, and other areas with appropriate infrastructure, including allowing greater density and reducing unnecessary permitting barriers. At the same time, we should maintain strong protections for forests, farmland, waterways, floodplains, and other environmentally sensitive areas. Act 250 and local zoning should focus on preventing real environmental harm, not creating duplicative processes that add cost and delay to responsible development. Smart growth can give us both more homes and better land conservation.
