Candidate For Office Assistant Judge
Prior to my work in the Judiciary, I was a lawyer with many years of experience representing clients on a wide range of business, employment, and conflict resolution matters. Then I worked for over sixteen years in the Vermont Judiciary, including serving as the State Court Administrator (the CEO of the Judicial Branch). In this role, I was responsible for all non-judicial personnel, the state Judicial Branch budget, and the administration of all aspects of the Branch. My first job in the court system was as the Judicial Educator, with oversight responsibility for the education of all judges. I'm a graduate of Vassar College and the Albany Law School of Union University, where I served as a Chief Notes Editor of the Albany Law Review.
It has been an honor to serve as Lamoille County Assistant Judge since I was appointed by the Governor in 2024. Assistant Judges serve as factfinders in contested cases in the family and civil divisions, which include cases involving domestic violence, stalking, extreme risk protection orders, divorce, parents' rights and responsibilities, and evictions, as examples. We deliberate with the Presiding Judge to reach decisions in each contested case we hear, and we participate in the final written decision. I am committed to providing fair and impartial justice to all parties who appear before my colleagues and me in Lamoille County.
Assistant judges are the county executives. We provide for the care, maintenance and use of county buildings, chief among them the historic Lamoille County Courthouse. The condition of the courthouse directly affects the judiciary’s ability to operate In Lamoille County. The sheriff's department building is also part of the County complex. We provide support for the sheriff and his department as outlined in state statutes. We prepare the county budget on an annual basis and present it at two public hearings - first a preliminary budget hearing and then a final hearing. Our fiscal strategies include prioritizing essential maintenance and repairs, capital planning, seeking cost-effective solutions, and conducting biennial audits.
