The physical conditions of our Jail and House of Corrections is always a priority. Currently, we have two nationally accredited Treatment Units for both the male and female population. We offer the same programming for both groups. One of the issues that arises for the female population is the lack of housing for minimum and pre-release females which I continue to address and seek other alternatives. Most recently we opened our "sub-day room" in the female unit to give those minimum and pre-lease females an option to have their own space. It is still within the secure perimeter however, we provided comfortable lounge furniture, their own eating area and their own recreation area. We also provide equal opportunities for employment.
My position is to adhere to the guidelines set forth by the Governor and in adherence the 2017 case "Lunn vs. Commonwealth". State and local law enforcement officials do not have legal authority to hold and arrest individuals solely on the basis of civil immigration detainers issued by ICE.
As Sheriff, I have an excellent relationship with our District Attorney. Evictions are difficult but the final decision to evict someone comes from the courts. My responsibility is to carry out the court's order fairly and impartially while maintaining the safety and security of everyone involved. I ensure we treat all parties with dignity and ensure the process is conducted in a respectful manner. This is a priority for me because we are just part of the process and we can make a difference in how we approach the situation.
After being with the agency for 30 plus years I have been part of the development of our treatment programs (both male and female). I will continue to support those programs, re-entry services, and continue to provide opportunities through vocational programming so when a male or female returns to the community they are better prepared for success.
The only way to ensure transparency is seek and/or welcome review of our budgetary practices. Those requests have and will continue to be met with full cooperation.
