They also enforce laws related to consumer protection, civil rights, fair labor, energy, and environmental protection, making the office central to safeguarding the rights and well‑being of Massachusetts residents.

As Attorney General, how would you protect the civil rights and safety of vulnerable or marginalized communities including immigrants?

I use every tool available to protect vulnerable communities. One of my first actions was investigating and suing a neo-Nazi group terrorizing LGBTQ+ events. I co-led the birthright citizenship lawsuit, challenged illegal immigrant student visa strippings, and secured the release of a Massachusetts resident wrongfully arrested by ICE. I co-led lawsuits protecting Planned Parenthood’s Medicaid funding and gender-affirming care for trans youth, and launched the state’s first confidential abortion legal hotline. I secured agreements protecting DEIA programs in our schools and filed briefs against Trump’s anti-DEIA EOs. Our Civil Rights Division responds to every complaint so that every person feels safe, heard, and protected.
As Attorney General, it’s my job to enforce the law, keep our residents safe, and protect the rights of all. My office prosecutes human and gun traffickers and white collar criminals. We created the first Gun Violence Prevention Unit in the AG’s Office. We also investigate bias in policing and wrongful conviction claims while providing re-entry support. We hold those in power accountable – in our state and in Washington – because we know public trust is essential to our work. When the federal government threatens our rights, we fight back. We’ve released Know Your Rights guides and sued to protect private health records from ICE. Above all, government should work for people by upholding the law and safeguarding our freedoms.
Our democracy is strongest when every eligible voter can cast their ballot. I’ve fought to make sure that remains true in Massachusetts. I co-led a lawsuit blocking Trump’s EO requiring proof of citizenship to register to vote, protecting 21 million Americans from disenfranchisement. When Trump’s DOJ demanded our voter registration list, I stood with Secretary Galvin and refused. The courts dismissed the case. I also co-led a lawsuit blocking Trump’s attempt to restrict mail-in ballots, and won. As elections approach this fall, I’m co-leading the work of state attorneys general to monitor threats to our democracy and ensure every vote is counted lawfully – no matter how the President may attempt to interfere or abuse his power.
I am deeply committed to transparency and public accountability as Attorney General. I developed the office’s first ever strategic plan to make clear to the public our priorities and to ensure our work reflects the needs of Massachusetts residents. My office aggressively recovers the misuse of tax dollars by state contractors and vendors, and we lead the nation in this work. We also bring criminal charges against public officials who commit misconduct. As AG, I have also consistently supported the Auditor’s right to audit the Legislature, while encouraging her to clarify how she will act within the limits of the state Constitution. I also support expanding our state’s public records law to include the Governor’s Office and the Legislature.
The Trump Administration has launched countless attacks on our democracy, Constitution, and billions of dollars of critical funding that Massachusetts residents rely on for everything from putting dinner on the table to powering our economy to funding our children’s education. At every turn, the Attorney General’s Office has stepped up to defend the people of Massachusetts. To date, we have filed more than 60 lawsuits against the Trump Administration for its unlawful and reckless actions putting our residents’ health care, education, and jobs at risk. We’ve protected nearly $4 billion in funding that the Trump Administration has tried to take back from Massachusetts – funding for schools, roads and bridges, and pediatric cancer research.
