As your current Commissioner (former Mayor & former Chair of the City’s Planning Zoning Board) I have the training & experience critical to protecting our quality of life & ensuring efficiency in government. Commission decisions impact our public safety, property rights and pocketbooks; experience helps carefully consider the consequences of every option. Some positions can be learned on the job, but at what risk and at what cost? St. Augustine Beach is the most desirable place to live & that didn’t happen by accident. During my 16 years of hard work on the commission, I helped shape the quality of life our community enjoys today. My training and experience reflect my commitment to serving the City that we are all proud to call home.
The next few years are a critical transition period for our city. After 37 years, Max Royle, our City Manager, is retiring. We also face major revenue loss if voters pass the increased homestead exemption. At the community’s request, I am seeking re-election to help ensure a smooth transition, keeping the quality and consistency of city services and amenities during these turbulent times. Experienced leadership is always essential but with turbulence on the horizon, now is the time to keep a steady hand on the helm! You can rely on my continued support for beach nourishment, public safety & policies that support our essential hometown character – so we can continue to enjoy all the things we love about living here!
I am an attorney, small business owner & support many local nonprofits. As an attorney, I have the analytical skills & reasoned judgment to make sound decisions while keeping the citizens’ interests in sacred trust as my guiding priority. My artistic background lends a creative eye toward problem solving & as a small business owner, I have a common-sense outlook & am fiscally conservative. My community service includes serving on the Board of Directors for SJC Council on Aging, and on the Friends of GTMNERR, member of Rotary & Elks Lodge. I strive to be objective, to consider different perspectives & enjoy approaching problems with an open mind. I have a reputation for being a good listener & collaborator who cares deeply for our community.
Growth & tourism have exploded and St. Aug. Bch. is disproportionately burdened. The challenge is to implement smart growth and curb negative impacts without burdening the residents with infrastructure costs of tourism. The opportunity is to gain amenities, services & revenue streams that wouldn’t exist without tourism. During my time on the Commission, we enshrined a 35’ building height limit into our city charter, protected the coastal canopy, & used tourist dollars to help locals. We have also taken advantage of growth by obtaining grants to fund community parks, events & services. We’ve significantly enhanced quality of life at the Beach with millions of dollars in outside funding for cultural, environmental and recreational resources.
My goal is to preserve what we love about St. Aug. Beach despite all the changes. Tourism isn’t going away, and neither are our new neighbors. Both support local jobs, farmers markets, festivals & the restaurants we all enjoy! Our city must prepare for changes in how (and how much) roads, sidewalks, parks & beaches are used through proactive ordinance review & grant funding for legacy assets like the historic Old City Hall, splash park, & community events. Creative solutions to new problems always exist if we stay level-headed, proactively protect the characteristics we love, & always look for that silver lining! I’m proud that our Commission has been doing a great job thus far & would be honored to continue this work for another term.
