For more than 20 years, I have worked in education, training, leadership, and workforce development. I served as a Regional Training Specialist with Quest Diagnostics, where I developed and led training programs, ensured compliance with policies, and supported employees across Northeast Florida. I am also the owner of Universal Phlebotomy Training School, where I have spent the past nine years preparing students for healthcare careers. In addition, I have served as a college instructor and have firsthand experience as the parent of three graduates of Duval County Public Schools. My professional leadership experience, educational background, and commitment to serving families have prepared me to make informed, student-centered decisions.
Duval County Public Schools has many strengths, including dedicated teachers and staff, strong career and technical education programs, magnet schools, and opportunities that prepare students for college and the workforce. However, the district also faces challenges such as declining enrollment, teacher retention, budget constraints, inconsistent academic performance among schools, and student behavior concerns. I believe we must build on our strengths while improving accountability, supporting educators, engaging families, and ensuring every child has access to a high-quality education regardless of where they live.
Recruiting and retaining excellent teachers requires creating an environment where educators feel valued, supported, and respected. I support strengthening mentorship programs for new teachers, expanding professional development opportunities, reducing unnecessary administrative burdens, recognizing outstanding performance, increasing classroom support, and providing clear pathways for career advancement. Teachers should have the resources they need to focus on teaching and helping students succeed.
Every student deserves a safe and productive learning environment. While discipline should be fair and consistent, it should also be balanced with appropriate interventions that address the root causes of disruptive behavior. Teachers must have the authority and support to maintain orderly classrooms without repeated disruptions. I support clear expectations, consistent consequences, parental involvement, counseling and behavioral supports when appropriate, and alternative interventions for students whose behaviors require additional services.
School safety must address both physical and emotional well-being. We should continue investing in secure campuses, trained school resource officers, emergency preparedness, and strong communication systems. Equally important is expanding access to school counselors, mental health resources, anti-bullying initiatives, and partnerships with families and community organizations. A safe learning environment allows students and teachers to focus on learning and achievement.
Public schools remain the foundation of our community, and our goal should be to make Duval County Public Schools the first choice for families. I will advocate for high academic standards, strong career and technical education, innovative programs, safe schools, excellent teachers, and meaningful family engagement. By highlighting student success, strengthening partnerships with businesses and community organizations, and ensuring responsible stewardship of taxpayer resources, we can increase confidence in our district schools and encourage families to choose them.
