The greatest challenge facing Maine right now is that everything we need to live has gotten far too expensive. The costs of groceries, housing, healthcare, childcare have gone up faster than families can keep up. This means people who have lived here for their adult lives cannot afford to age in place and watch their grandchildren grow up. This means people young adults who grew up in Maine are struggling to get ahead and afford to do so, even while working hard.
Much like Maine, residents in South Portland are struggling with the rising cost of living. I will strongly support efforts to tax those who can most afford it and raise revenues for programs like eviction prevention and property tax relief. Community members are also worried about whether the air in South Portland is safe to breath. I will continue the fight for clean air and corporate accountability of the oil companies operating in South Portland. And, residents are concerned about the safety of their neighbors who have been unfairly targeted, surveilled, and under direct threat by the ICE. I plan to do everything I can in Augusta to keep people safe, including addressing the use of AI-powered surveillance that enables federal overreach.
I am deeply involved in local organizing in South Portland; I was a lead organizer of the No Flock for SoPo campaign and have been active in our community's response to ICE. This local organizing allows me to remain connected and accountable to the residents who I represent. I will also lean on my successful experience building and working in coalition to effectively collaborate and coordinate with fellow legislators to tackle shared challenges and corporate power. Connections are our strength in Maine.
