Knocking on thousands of doors across Belfast, Belmont, and Northport, I’ve heard about both the challenges and the hopes of my neighbors. I’ve heard happy stories about new babies, kids heading off to college, and Mainers coming home to put down roots. But I’ve also heard from older folks struggling on fixed incomes, families unsure they can heat their homes or put food on the table, and people working two or three jobs who still can’t afford housing or healthcare. I’ve met young couples who want to stay but worry about access to medical care, birthing centers, and affordable childcare. Our problems are urgent and interconnected. We need real solutions and representation in Augusta that will fight for economic and environmental justice.
In my district, affordable housing and the rising cost of homeownership are two of the biggest concerns I hear about. Property tax bills are increasing at unreasonable and unpredictable rates, making it harder for working families and seniors to stay in their homes. No one should be taxed out of their home. We should cap how quickly property taxes can rise so families, seniors, and renters can stay rooted in their communities. Property taxes should fund strong schools and public services—not force people to choose between housing, food, and heat. We need a fairer system that asks more of those who can afford it while protecting the people who make our communities work. We can protect homeowners while creating opportunities for young Mainers
I’m a 29-year-old woman, and I grew up here in Belfast. I’m optimistic about Maine and our ability to build a brighter future. I believe Maine can show the rest of the country that there are real state-level solutions to some of our biggest challenges. We can build a more progressive tax system, ask more of wealthy individuals and corporations, and invest those resources back into our rural and small-town communities. That means building affordable, sustainable housing, creating good-paying union jobs in the trades, modernizing our infrastructure, and confronting the climate crisis while protecting the environment that makes Maine so special.
