Qualifications I was born, raised and still live in the district. I know the people and their needs. I am attorney with experience as a public defender and a defense lawyer. I am also a former Adjunct Instructor at Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College. Additionally, I am a certified Arbitrator and Mediator for the Circuit Court. d
Education University of South Carolina - BA, Western Michigan University - Juris Doctorate
I oppose measures that add burdens to the voting process, such as, requiring witnesses for absentee mail-in ballots, which disproportionately affects the elderly in rural communities. I fully support public transparency in the counting process both in-person and live stream as long as it does not create extra costs or additional burdens for election boards. I support easily accessible curbside voting for voters with mobility issues. Additionally, I support the protection of election workers from intimidation or bodily harm. It is the right of every citizen to vote and voting should be encouraged as the foundation of our democracy.
Reform how we fund schools. We need a funding formula that follows the child, not the county tax base. Districts like 122 have high poverty rates, aging infrastructure and fewer resources than more affluent areas. Adequacy and equity in funding must be the law, not just an aspiration.
Expand Medicaid NOW. SC is one of 10 states that still hasn't expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. Our state has lost billions in federal dollars and left more than 200,00 working people with out coverage. We must also protect rural hospitals . We don't have enough doctors, nurses or mental health professionals in this district. We need to offer scholarship programs and loan forgiveness to bring healthcare providers to our rural communities. We also must address the maternal mortality rate in SC which at crisis level. Additionally, we must recognize that mental health and substance abuse is healthcare. Every community in this district needs accessible, affordable mental health services without stigma or a 90 mile drive.
I am not against the future. I am not against technology or economic development. I am against a rigged deal where big corporations get the benefits and the people of Colleton, Hampton and Jasper counties get the bill. Economic development must actually develop OUR economy. Taxpayers should not subsidize billion dollar corporations.
