Washoe County School Board Trustee, District C

County School District Trustees serve on the elected board that governs the fifth-largest school district in the United States. Trustees set district policy, approve the multi-billion-dollar budget, hire and evaluate the superintendent, and provide oversight of curriculum implementation, student services, and district operations. In recent years, school board races nationwide have drawn increased attention as communities debate issues such as curriculum standards, parental involvement, student safety, library materials, teacher support, and how schools address diversity and inclusion. Because trustees influence how these policies are implemented locally — and how schools balance educational quality, transparency, and community values — these races play a significant role in shaping the direction of public education and maintaining trust between families and the district.

Student safety requires a layered approach focused on prevention, early intervention, and strong partnerships. As a WCSD Trustee and former law enforcement officer, I support trained school police, secure campuses, and clear communication systems. I also support expanding school-based mental health services, strengthening threat assessment teams, and training staff to recognize early warning signs. Building trust with students, staff, and families helps prevent incidents before they occur. Collaboration with parents, public safety, and community partners is essential to address bullying, substance abuse, and online threats while ensuring safe, supportive learning environments.
As a WCSD Trustee, I support prioritizing teacher pay and benefits through responsible budgeting and advocacy. I would work to ensure available funds are directed first to classrooms and staff, while reducing unnecessary central costs where possible. Retaining quality educators requires competitive compensation, strong benefits, and a respectful work environment. I support collaboration with employee associations to find sustainable solutions and improve working conditions. I will also advocate at the state level for increased education funding to support long-term improvements in teacher pay and retention.
