We have a lot of expected growth coming our way with the recent construction development at the nearby Lithium mine. Making sure our citizens are safe, preparing for the new growth, and making sure that we position the City of Winnemucca to prosper are my top priorities.
I would be open to listen to any suggestions that people have to help contractors build affordable housing here in Winnemucca. We have residents here that make good wages, specifically in the mining industry, but still struggle to buy an affordable home especially if they are single income. A recent contractor has started building two-story duplexes, and that has helped, but they are still priced at over $350K. We also need apartment buildings as not everyone can or wants to buy a home.
The homeless problem in Winnemucca has escalated over the past few years. We don't have a lot of programs here to assist them so I would continue to support purchasing train tickets for them to hopefully get them to family, wherever that may be, or to Reno where they have shelters and programs for the homeless. Reno's homeless problem has also grown, and I am sure that some of the people that we get here come due to the overflow in Reno. But we just don't have the programs here to provide them proper services.
